Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am only 40, but lately I feel as if I am an old, old woman. Aches and pains in odd places, tired, grouchy, unattractive...What can I do? I don't need to feel 20 again, I just want to feel my age! Of course it doesn't help that my grandson gives me only a few hours of sleep each night, that I am overweight, and don't exercise enough (Ok, at all...)and I've taken up knitting (LOL!), but I was wondering...
What do you ladies do to help you feel young again?

Have you read 'A Mother's Rule of Life' by Holly Pierlot? It helps us to set priorities...prayer, person, partner, parent, provider. I think this order is very easy to forget when we have so many people depending on us...we tend to put ourselves last. However, it really is crucial that we place a high priority on taking care of ourselves, especially as we age. Not in an obsessive way...but to at least make sure that we take proper care of the bodies that the Lord has provided for us (His Temple). I'm still struggling with this myself. However, I'm finding that as I follow my 'rule' that a lot of things are beginning to fall into place and I'm more open to follow God's will for me...and that's always exciting and new.

Theresa,

You have SOOO much going on, it's no wonder you're a little wiped out. Lack of sleep is the big killer for me!

A retreat might help. At least, that's what I'm going to do to renew myself.

I don't have any secrets, but hoping someone else does. I see what you do on your blog and think you are more young at heart than I am!

I knit!

I play outside with the kids or on the floor (if the weather isn't cooperating) or just cuddle/wrestle/play ... nothing makes me feel younger (or older sometimes ) than having the little ones around....

One thing I do though, and it's been mentioned on the coffee-good vs bad thread, is that naps are an important part of the day for ALL. Even if you call it quiet time, and no one sleeps, being in their rooms, on their beds, being quiet helps rejuvenate us all! Sometimes we fall asleep, sometimes they're down for an hour -- but it's an important break for us all.....

And watch the cracks about knitting -- I've been knitting since I was 8!

I walk. Not easy in this weather we have had lately, but when I am feeling like you describe, I just have to go out and walk. Due to dh's work hours, it is usually rather late at night, but if I don't, well, I am not the most pleasant mom/wife/person to be around     . After about the first mile, I start to feel somewhat better. I am in need of serious "health renovations!" (read:weightloss! ) and the walking is just about my only exercise.

My oldest sis is going to be 60 this year! She is very upset about it! and we can't even talk about it to her! So, I have set my mind to improving my state of health (spiritually and physically,) so when I reach 60 I will, hopefully, have a more contented mind-set. I know she is thinking about our mum, who passed away at age 79. The mortality factor is scaring her. My other sis doesn't cope well at all, either. I see faith as the big factor lacking in both their lives. The oldest does go to the Lutheran church, but she doesn't do much on a daily basis. My other sis is 56, and she doesn't attend church at all. So....... I have just gotten totally off-track , here, Theresa!

Like Mary suggested, I would try to get outside every day, take a nap if you can!, and something I am trying to do- improve the diet if it needs it.

I will pray for you, Theresa!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I just read this passage from George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin:

The great-great-grandmother is speaking: but it IS so silly of people to fancy that old age means crookedness and witheredness and feebleness and sticks and spectacles and rheumatism and forgetfulness! It is so silly! Old age has nothing whatever to do with all that. The right old age means strength and beauty and mirth and courage and clear eyes and strong painless limbs.

Oh, thank you all!It is so good to have this support.

Honestly,I love my grandchildren dearly, but they are very needy and really sap my energy. 1yo wants to be held constantly (who can blame him after the neglect of his mother?)and the 3yo has no idea how to behave in a home- he breaks things purposely, jumps on/off furniture, not yet potty trained, etc, etc. Lots of work to do there. And I just don't bounce back from things like I used to!

I know I need to get outside more, and get more exercise. It is hard when it is so cold-I don't like taking the baby out in it. I need to just do it. Thankfully spring is just around the corner.
Naps may be doable.
And as for diet...well..here it is 1:00 and I just realized all I have consumed today is 2 cups of coffee and a fig newton! I feed my children but forget to feed myself! (so, what's with all the extra pounds, eh? LOL!)

Keep the ideas coming!

Ah...you hit the nail on the head Theresa! On the days when I don't have time to eat I fell horrible by mid-afternoon. Ready-to-eat protein helps me a lot. Boiled eggs, tuna salad prepared the night before (or just opening a can of tuna) peanut butter.

That, and a good strong dose of Vit. B Complex every day.

Of course I've felt better than ever since my low thyroid was diagnosed and I began the medication.

I'm keeping your family in my prayers.

Workout! Yep, I'm sorry to say it.s my answer - makes you feel great, look better, more energy, greater body acceptance, makes you play more with the kids and try sports with them...Thats been my experience.

How about indoor workouts - weights, routines from books done to music of your choice, workout DVDs, walking DDs, treadmills or rowers or spinners?

What workout video would you recommend for someone just starting out? I used to be very athletic, but something changed somewhere along the line and now I feel like a big old blob.

Theresa I joined Curves, very easy to begin and it makes me feel good. I also think a retreat is awesome if you can swing it. I could'nt go by myself so we all went up to NY to the Francsicans of the Immaculata. I cannot stress enough whta that did for me and my whole family! Think about it, is there anything similar you could work out. Give the possibility to Mary and she will open doors for you. In the mean time I will say a memorare for you!

If you like walking and walking variations, with or without weights, there are the Leslie Sansone or Geroge Foreman workouts. Leslie is in her 40s, btw.

Denisw Austin is 50 ths year and has some beginner level workouts - some dance, some walking, some weights, some pilates...

If you like a more athletic feel or martial arts, Billy Blanks has some beginner kickboxing workouts - esp his Christian Believers workouts and Capture the Power set. Billy turned 50 last year - its kind of motivating to have an older instructor, sometimes.

Collage Video lists workouts by level and type and has sample video clips online for you to preview...HTH!

Theresa,
I second Collage Video. They have great reviews and you can see clips online.
I use the FIRM 5 day Ab's(5 minute ab workout-5 times--can't say I do it everyday ), I also have some "Dummies" tapes--Weight's for Dummies and 15 Minute Work Outs for Dummies. I like these 'cause they are short and easy to follow.

I love Leslie Sansone! Ofcourse I very rarely work out these days...but maybe this thread is inspiring me. Also, dd loves it too and actually wanted to do it yesterday...so she ended up doing it on her own...lol.

I have both the walk/jog video and one for weight training with Christian music in the background.

If you feel like a big old blob I would try Yoga, there is one for weight loss, and it really gets you breathing and stretched , toned and very relaxed. I was doing it last night beacuse it is great for stress reduction.

Hi Theresa,

Sorry, I have to ditto what everyone else has said about exercise. But I also want to add something else that makes me feel younger is listening to 80s songs! Put some on while you are washing dishes and I guarantee after about 3 songs, you will feel 10 years younger

Good luck!
Therese
