My husband and I have practiced NFP using the symptothermal method taught by CCLI since we were married. In the past year or so (after hitting that magical age of 40!) I noticed that there is an increasing lag between a peak day according to mucus and the thermal shift--up to a week of lag time. In the past these were nearly simultaneous. Needless to say, this has reduced our phase 3 considerably.
I've been pondering if following a mucus-only method such as Creighton or Billings might be a better fit at this stage in life. I've done a little online research into both but really would love some "been there, done that" sort of input from the ladies here.
Any advice?

My DH and I started with CCLI and the sympto-thermal method, too. Since my last child three years ago, though, I have been paying attention to symptoms only. Once I have three days of drying up, I consider myself in Phase 3.
I'm not charting or anything anymore, so I can't give you much more information than that. We've been successful in postponing pregnancy this way since my youngest was born.
Also, in the beginning after my youngest was born, I did buy some ovulation predictor strips (they're very cheap on Amazon) just to double-check before my cycles had returned to normal. Maybe some of those would be useful for you? If you can use those to pinpoint when ovulation is occurring, you will better be able to tell month-to-month when Phase 3 is actually beginning.

Mucus can dry up (lessen) as you get older too. My only suggestion is that you might need to consider that if you drop the temp sign altogether.

Have you considered calling CCLI and getting a consultation with them directly? They are really helpful and wonderful to work with.
Also, I don't know when you learned the method but in the last few years they redid all of their materials and rules to make them more concise and takes into consideration more of these situations. This might help as well.

Just a short note on if you drop the temp taking, remember that as we get older double peaking is very common and you don't really know about it with mucous only until it it is past.
Just a note because in the last year we have had 3 different couples that had this exact thing happen and unexpectantly end up pregnant. All 3 in their 40's and not really ready for another child. Lots of frustration on their parts.
I'm with Betsy, call CCLI and ask if there is a teaching couple that can help nearby. Especially one that has been teaching and practicing NFP into their 40's.
Best of Luck and I hope you find an answer.

Thanks for all the input and advice, ladies. I have the newer materials including the perimenapausal book. I'll plan to review again and then call CCLI. Unfortunately with a recent move, I've been less than diligent in charting--relying more on memory and then forgetting about it once a new cycle starts. So perhaps I'll start by getting a few good charts down, consulting with CCLI and others. Thanks!

I'll pray for you Susan! We are having a difficult time of it right now because I have cycles where I ovulate a couple of times. My temps are all over the place.
It is getting a bit frustrating!
