Hello ladies, it has been a while since I have been here on the forum. Life has been very busy as I'm sure all of your lives have been too. I miss the forum but I’m trying to limit my internet time as much as I can to achieve more time for prayer, homeschooling, and simplicity.

I am trying for the second time to lose weight. I have put on some much weight and am probably at my heaviest - ever. I am not doing this for vanity reasons although to fit into my old clothes would be very convenient but for health reasons mostly.

With my last baby I had a bad case of gestational diabetes. I had to give myself three injections a day into my stomach and 8 finger pricks for levels. This probably in itself doesn't sound too bad but I was also having progesterone injections twice weekly for 35 weeks and steroid injections around 30 weeks (I think, don’t clearly remember dates). For the first 14 weeks I also had blood tests weekly for levels and so by the end of my very long pregnancy I felt like a human pin cushion. It was absolutely worth it as I had a beautiful blessing in a miraculous full term baby.

I am hoping not to be one of the 50% of women who end up getting diabetes later in life and after experiencing a bad case of gestation diabetes that is a possibility. I'm not getting any younger but I’m certainly getting bigger. I have other health issue that I’m sure could be settled if I could just lose weight.
My problem is that I go well for about 4-5 weeks then I fall off the wagon, then lose motivation. I don’t eat a lot of junk but I don’t exercise any either. I love to cook but not sweet things, for me it’s more the carbs.

Another thing, if I’m ever to have another baby (God willing) being at this weight I will have a lot of difficulties on top of the many other difficulties, no matter what weight I am, that come with my problematic pregnancies.

I really just need some motivation and encouragement. Any tips that may have helped anyone get through months and months of weight lose.

I'm not over 40 yet and have never been pregnant but I have BIG weight issues. What has been helping little by little is portion control - I am a carboholic too, brought up on bread, pasta and potatoes because they were cheap and still struggling not to go crazy with them. So actually weighing/measuring every thing is a huge help, and my portion sizes are down so that for the first time ever I am able to say "woah, that is far too much pasta for me", and I find I am craving less carbs as I feed my "addiction" less too. Although, some things (Macdonalds fries ) have me actually stealing food from my own children, so I just need to avoid those things.

I have been thinking on this for some hours, sice I saw your post.
I have strugggled with my weight for many years, and know I need to keep it down for health reasons.
I think the biggest thing, is to move- exercise.
Keep away from breads etc. I know there are days when I could count several slices of bread, muffins, etc. Ijust neeeded to train myself. You know it all. When it gets hard share with DH. Let him inspire you and motivate you.
We love the Biggest Looser, and we have implemented there ideas into our daily life.
I think it is all about claiming a little bit of time for you, and keeping it going. Thats where Dh comes in again.

Thank you for your comments ladies.

I've started back on my Metabolic Jumpstart diet. I haven't subscribed again this year but I'm following the plan they gave me from last year. I lost 4 kg in one month but fell off the wagon after a week away at a homeschooling camp and haven't had the motivation or the timeout to really start again (this year has been so hectic). I know it works so I’m really trying to make it work for me in the context of our life now.

We don't have free to air TV except when we connect the aerial for some big sports championships like the US Open Golf, Aussie Open Tennis or Wimbledon so I don't know much about the Biggest Loser Leanne. I did however see the woman that won the competition and her weight lose was amazing.

Hubby is so busy most of the time that I'm pretty much on my own on this. But I will get there...Slowly but surely; some days though I nice piece of warm toast with plenty of honey and a sweet Lady Grey is just what the doctor ordered, but in the bigger scheme of things losing weight is more important and curbing the flesh even more so for the salvation of souls and my own.

My husband and I have both found that limiting our carb intake and focusing on proteins and fresh vegetables has helped a lot. We haven't strictly followed any diet, but since Easter he has lost about 20 lbs, and I have lost close to 10, essentially just by cutting processed flour and sugar out of our diet.


In the health forum there's a great thread from a few months back which inspired me -- I think Erin started it, actually! And I have always been a carboholic -- bread, bread, bread -- but this has not been too difficult, and the results are very motivating. I'll see if I can find that thread, because it was full of very helpful information about this kind of diet.

(I wish I could give credit where credit is due); however I believe it was Martha who was having tremendous weight loss success by following what she coined the S diet, three little rules:

No sweets
No seconds
No snacking

It's the carbs for me too, I love toast as it is quick and easy as I'm moving through the day. I must admit though I love chocolate also but not in excess.

I couldn't find the three S's in the Saint's Diet post but loved the post and related to it very well. I'm amazed at how much it reflected where I'm at.

If I am ever to have anymore children - God willing, I need to get this weight down to have any chance of a successful pregnancy and a healthy post pregnancy period. Yet anything is possible to God. I know he expects us to be pro-active with trust, so I'll do my part and how ever it turns out, I will trust that that is His part.

She only mentions it briefly and I see it's actually called the No-S Diet which is
* No Sweets
* No Snacks
* No Seconds

This is known on the internet as the NOS diet (No es) and there is one more part of it - you follow the rules except (sometimes) on days that begin with S and Special days (like a birthday, etc.) the problem for me is that I end up justifying a lot of "special" days

I think what Leanne said is key. Exercise! I say eat that piece of toast (whole wheat or rice bread, maybe, with real butter or peanut butter) and then walk everyday. Are you able to fit a 30-minute walk into your schedule? What about some exercise videos? I truly think it is not so much the diet as the lack of exercise that hurts us 'older' gals.

Are there other carbs you could cut out and not feel deprived? If you enjoy the toast, and it seems that you do, I'd eat the toast and not eat, say, potatoes or rolls or too much pasta. I like toast, too. :) Maybe it's considered a comfort food. :)

A friend, who also had to do the insulin shots during pregnancy, had better luck during her next pregnancy by walking a bunch.

I actually think I am at my heaviest, ever, as well although most would think I'm somewhat slim. I don't feel well and I know that if I just exercised I would lose the pounds, but I am so lazy. :(

Eva, I'd be careful with that book. The introduction tells us it is highly influenced by Rudolph Steiner and anthroposophy.

But we can certainly bring up body image and how that's influenced whether for health or fashion. Perhaps in another thread that can focus on that?

But by all means.. let's continue talking about healthy ways to lose weight.

Last month I whined to my dh about not being able to lose weight even though I was exercising and watching what I ate, so I decided to get serious and start REALLY keeping track of everything.

The 10th of July was my birthday so as an early birthday present I bought myself a BodyBugg (this is not an advertisement --I do not get any money for this!).

BodyBugg is the feedback tool they use on The Biggest Loser. I always wondered what they were wearing on their upper arms --I figured it was just a heart monitor but no it's a good bit more than that.

BodyBugg is an armband device that tracks all calories you burn every minute of the day (it measures motion and steps, skin temperature and the rate at which heat is being dissipated from your body --apparently it has been clinically and independently validated, and on average is over 90% accurate).

Basically, you wear it on your arm all day and you download the info to computer and track your results. The BodyBugg program also tracks your food for you (you have to enter that, the armband is just tracking calories burned and steps). It's all about calorie balance --the difference between calories consumed and calories burned. You set up a program for yourself based on how much you want to lose and how fast (anywhere from 1/2 lb to 3 lb a week).

I am on a 1.5lb /week plan with my daily calorie limit being 1550 and my calorie burn goal being 2300 to give me a daily deficit of 750 or a weekly deficit of 5250 or 1.5 pounds lost. I started on a higher level (1500 and 2500 and was able to meet it but based on some reading I am doing about fat burning and building muscle I decided to go a bit more conservative). I know that sounds slow and it is but I am convinced that slow weight loss is the healthiest and the most likely to be kept off.

If you have questions about BodyBugg just ask me or Google and read about it. It is pricey --which is why I got it as a birthday present and it was $174 when I got it but I haven't seen it that low since I ordered mine --I think they are running about $199 now . If you get one, do also get the digital display because although you can download the info to your computer it is GREAT to take the digital display with you on a workout and see how much you are burning --it's very motivating. OK enough about all that --my results so far . . . I lost 4lb. the first week and 4.2 lb. the second week! Now, this week I went up a pound but I am not at all upset about it because a) it is hot and humid here like a tropical rain forest and my feet and ankles are swollen like little sausages--plus I am in the middle of my cycle and b) my measurements show that I have lost an inch from my waist since last week (3 total since I started!) an inch from my thighs (hallelujah!), .5 inch from my chest (2.5 total), and 1.5 inch off my hips (2.5 total) so I AM losing body fat and that is what I want. Based on my weight AND measurements my body fat % has gone down 3.5 points so that is great! Also, I gained .5 in. in my calves this week (after losing an inch the last 2 weeks) but I have been running so I know that's muscle because you cannot pinch any fat there!

Oh and the running. I can run a 5K (3.2 miles) straight. It takes me 40 minutes but I have done it 4 times so far. YAY! Generally I do 5 miles. Walk the first mile, run the next 3.25 and walk the last mile. let me tell you ladies --running burns some serious calories! I intersperse that with weight training and rowing so as not to get injured or over train.

So far, it seems to be working. I will say that I am very glad I got the BodyBugg. It doesn't do anything to make you lose weight but it is a great tool and motivator.

I have mentioned here (somewhere) that I started wearing a pedometer to count my steps (which seemed a bit silly to me at first) looking for 10,000 a day. What I have found is that I really like having this objective feedback - even when I don't make my steps goal.

I'm going to look into BodyBugg. I also have a loved one who I think might really appreciate this type of feedback. I'll keep you posted. And...

What I like about the BodyBugg is how it measures ALL activity. It does count steps but there have been plenty of times when I hit my 2500 daily calorie burn but did not reach 10,000 steps.

I'm down 12lb. now (since I started June 30th). It's all about calorie deficit. Burn more than you consume. I HATE that it's true but it is. Calories are calories. You need to exercise and ideally eat well (because junk won't give you the energy you need for exercising) but just burn more than you consume. Low carb, low fat --whatever works for you is fine (I can't eat too many carbs because they make me sleepy) but you need a deficit.

A 500 calorie deficit every day over a week will give you a pound of weight loss a week. 1000 daily (which I do) will give you two (I'm averaging more loss than that but I also exercise more). I stagger my calories and exercise so that my body doesn't get too used to a set amount and being able to eat more some days means you really don't feel deprived. I can eat ANYTHING I want --just not more than 1500 calories a day on average. Some days it's 1200 some 1800 but I make sure it's 7000 or more over the course of the week.

Mind you before I started really keeping track I would have sworn I wasn't eating that much but it adds up quickly. Even good food. Yes nuts are good for you but they pack a lot of calories etc.

Keep in mind that if you don't eat enough food daily your body slows down its metabolism so you have to EAT. My friend was exercising as much as me and not losing because she wasn't eating enough. Imagine how frustrated she was that I was eating so well and still losing. She's doing better now.

Also I aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight a day. That's a lot more than you think and most people do not eat enough protein. My husband buys me whey powder and I drink 3 shakes a day to augment my protein (1 scoop is 130 calories and 24 grams of protein). I am picky about taste and I LOVE the stuff he buys.

Protein will help you lose fat and gain muscle --exactly what you want because gaining muscle will help keep your bones strong AND it will help you keep the fat off for good. I have to tell you, I DO NOT feel deprived.

Yes it took extra effort to pay so much attention to what I was eating at first but I have an "advantage" (if you could even call it that) in that I weigh and measure food for my diabetic children anyway so it wasn't that much of a leap.

Trust me, I have never been a disciplined person. If I can do this anyone can!
