So where do you purchase clothing? I'm pretty classical in my wardrobe choices. I don't wear anything trendy, not that my figure would allow it anyway. I buy some things at JC Penneys and I do look at catalogs that come in the mail but my budget doesn't allow for anything expensive.
I'm just curious about where other "wise" ("over 40") women do their shopping.

Ebay and thrift stores are my favorite haunts.
Used to be a lot more thrift stores, but I finally found a brand I love and pretty much wear exclusively so I shop a lot more on ebay now that I am looking for something in particular.
How about this - when I find something I love that works perfectly for me in clothing or shoes I tend to buy it in multiples.
I always loved the simplicity of wearing a uniform personally

...Well, I'm not 40 (yet) but does 35 and a half count? 
I am a lazy clothes shopper, I avoid the mall at all costs and haven't been (proudly!) in several years. I do most of my shopping at a "one-stop-shopping" store where I'm able to grab household grocery items and other miscellaneous things. I comb the sales and clearance racks looking for good finds on sale, because I'm there anyway, and it's completely convenient, and I could care less about brand-names.
I'm an online-shopper gal. My favorite online stores always have a sales or clearance section. You'd be amazed what you can find, when you're not actually intentionally looking for clothes ~ because if you're at all like me, it seems when you need something, you can't find what you're looking for, and when you don't need anything, that's when you see all the things you need (want). Having a few good staple things in your wardrobe can go a long way in making new outfits. Nice cartigan sweaters that can mix and match with many undershirts. Two, maybe three pairs of good pants or jeans (you can always make dark colored jeans look dressy), and a couple of nice button shirts (Lands End has lovely shirts, and they always have a sales section online).
I went to Costco shortly after baby #3 was born. I saw a pair of pants that I really liked, but didn't want to spend any money on clothes, especially because I still had lots of pounds to lose after having a baby, but I bought the pants anyway (they were unbelievably cheap), but I bought them in a size that I was hoping to fit in at some point ... (I'm a "no-pressure" weight loss type after having a baby). But I knew that someday I would fit into them. And that time came just a few months ago! Yea!

I need to learn to buy in multiples! There are certain items of clothing that I have worn to rags (well, not really, but you know what I mean) and when I go to get the same item to replace it, I can't find them anywhere.
And, I'm sort of a uniform person too. When I wear something that is outside of what I normally wear, my husband and my kids all look at me funny.
My mom always wore certain labels. Not for fashion, but because she knew they fit her well. When I was younger I thought that was so boring. Now I see the wisdom in it. I guess I need to find what works well, WRITE IT DOWN somewhere so I don't forget, and stick with it.

I would much rather shop on line than at the mall too! As a matter of fact, we have to drive to the next town to do any mall shopping so it rarely happens. I've even been known to order an item in two different sizes and return the one that doesn't fit! Now, I admit I've only done that a couple of times, like when I was trying to find a dress for my mom's wedding, but it was actually easier than driving all the way to the mall.
And yes to the on line stores with clearance or "outlet" sections! I've actually bought a few items from Orvis that way. They were mega-reduced in price and I just love them.
Speaking of Orvis ... am I wierd that I like that store? My DH tells me it's just a sign that I am, um, "maturing". So if I wear something from Orvis does that mean I'm old?

I watch Lands' End, Chadwick's and Eddie Bauer (rarely!) for sales and clearance items. I got a great skirt and pair of black slacks from Chadwick's this winter on sale. They are now staples of my wardrobe. I am an online shopper. I dream of J Jill, but have only very rarely found things reduced enough to buy.
When I do go out, I usually do well at Kohl's. They have nice "grown-up" clothes.

I'm very interested in this topic! It seems like I never have any nice-looking clothes. I need to get some presentable spring and summer things; been thinking about outlet malls.

I live about 5 minutes from Kohl's so that is where I have the most luck. Depending on my size (which varies!) I have also had luck in-store and online with Lane Bryant, CJBanks, and Dress Barn (actually found dresses for the first time in years). I used to buy a lot from LLBean but it has been a while and their selection has changed over the years. Once in a while I have good luck at Macy's. I rarely go to the malls anymore.

I actually try and get most of my clothes from the Eddie Bauer outlet near my house, Kohls, Old Navy (for the crew neck t-shirts that are a staple of my summer wardrobe), Cato Fashions for skirts, occasionally JCPenney and JJill if they have a good sale online.
Right now I scored with the cutest peasant style, tiered skirts at Old Navy--just new for the spring--and only $15. I can't find it online but it is exactly like this one but longer--all the way to my ankle!

Now, I am jealous! I love Eddie Bauer! Although, I really need to lose some weight to buy the clothes I want from there. (Then there is the issue of money.  ) I did just get some flannel-lined jeans from them for half price. Lucky for me, I am still freezing in 60 degree weather.

Tops - Lands End on sale - I bought several T-shirts in August to stash for this summer - they were about $6 each, cheaper than our local consignment shop.
This winter I discovered that a style of corduroy pants at Kohl's fit me and I bought 3 pair. Of course I've worn them to death, but at $16 each, with two pairs probably surviving through next winter, that is not bad.
Sweaters - the consignment shops! I bought two with tags still on in November, and they've been great.
I'd love to find a long denim skirt from somewhere besides China for the summer. I'm quite tall and long-waisted, though, so this is tough.

I hit Goodwill and other local thrift shops periodically -- just go in and browse. If I'm looking for a specific thing under the wire (like an Easter dress on Holy Saturday), then I'm frustrated, but if I'm just looking, I almost always find something to squirrel away. I did once, under the gun, find a very nice Anne Taylor Loft dress to wear to a fancy awards dinner -- a classic shift-type sleeveless dress which I paired with a silky black shirt for a jacket, for about $8 -- but I'm not always that lucky!
Over time I look for basic pieces that all go together -- for example, I bought a dark-brown a-line skirt, which is linen, so I can wear it in hot weather, but dark enough to wear with winter clothes (I think it might be Old Navy -- can't remember now). I bought it because I already had things to go with it, and now when I go thrifting, I keep that skirt in mind and look for more things to go with it to make more outfits.
I don't have particular brands which are my favorites, but I look for anything well-made, and tend towards solid colors rather than prints -- easier to put outfits together and feel more or less polished (not that I really am. I am not a fashionista at all!). I have found J.Jill t-shirts, LL Bean sweaters, the Anne Taylor dress, etc, all in thrift stores. It's not an efficient way to shop in terms of time, but it's a great way to try out quality brands whose prices would otherwise be a deterrent.

I can’t do thrift shops like I would like to, I have such a severe cat allergy, that if the previous owner has had cats, I am itching and breaking out in hives, even after washing There is one consignment shop that I have had pretty good luck at.....they are “higher” end, and very picky about the clothes they take.....and sometimes get a little itchy trying something on, but I have found awesome deals and been okay with my allergies there, whew! I found a nice blazer, sort of that pretty green.....it is a Talbot’s....I got it for $15!!!!! I have found nice skirts there as well.
My other favorites are J Jill (on sale only), Kohl’s is nice for plain crew neck t-shirts, (hey, Jennifer, that’s my summer uniform, too!!!! ) and I am going to try to sew a few skirts as well.....
