My mom and uncle joke about how when you get older your routines get longer. I see it! Morning and night routines ARE getting longer. And I need more time to take care of my body--exercise, prepare/pack good food, foot care, exercise for neck, back and knee...yikes...and care of home and hubby and I am homeschooling 2 young kids--6 and 11.
How do you fit it all in? I have resorted to videos to babysit. I don't like it but...
Looking for ideas. I try to rise earlier in the am but dd always senses this and then needs her cuddle time. I really don't want to fall apart...
Just curious. I notice if I miss a "task" I pay later-back pain, weight gain, etc.

Anne, I honestly can't believe how high maintenance I've become! I have no ideas to share at the moment, but I'll be following this topic with interest .
Love,

I feel like I'm finally giving myself permission after all these years to actually spend the time I ought to spend on things, as if I've spent many years rushing and pressuring myself. I tend to think that things like laundry, exercise, and meals won't take any time at all! We definitely do less, but it seems more peaceful around here. I say "No" more often than I used to and I have realized that you can't teach your children EVERYTHING you might want to, so I have simplified our school work some as well.

Now I wonder what I'm NOT doing - my routines don't see that much longer?

Maybe you are just a little younger?
When I hit 43 it hit me. Almost 46, I feel like I am falling apart.

I'm 46. I think my routines SHOULD take longer. I realize I fall apart faster -- I used to be able to "get away" with bad food choices, skipping meals, hasty dental hygiene, little exercise etc. Now those things have consequences.
However, I tend to be in a habit of rushing through that kind of thing and I almost feel guilty about the amount of time that can be sucked away by intentional, sit-down eating of healthy food -- a proper amount of exercise -- a good routine of skin care, hair care, mouth care, and vitamin intake. We're talking 2 hours or more for all of that, which I used to compress into less than an hour -- eating in the kitchen while serving the family, skipping the exercising, and hurrying through the rest of it.
I am reasonably healthy and am sure that if I had a health issue all this would take much longer still. Thinking about other people, I know that it makes sense to "put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others" but for me, that wisdom doesn't stop me from feeling guilty and selfish. Of course, part of the problem is that I'd PREFER to spend the extra moments writing or reading online.
Not much advice for you I guess, I'm sorry! I think you really just have to set aside the time.... maybe in bits and pieces during the day if you have to.

I'm trying to tie taking extra/more time on *maintenance* with being mindful, doing and focusing on one thing at a time. That is also a good idea for my aging brain, which can't keep too many different ideas in place as well as it used to... I'm right there with Willa - I can't get away with shortchanging myself the way I could when I was younger. You all are a comfort and encouragement to me; I'm not the only one who has been noticing these changes.
Peace,
Nancy
