Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am 49, menopausal, and I'm waking about 6-8 times a night with hot flushes. Any ideas on a supplement I can take to ease this?

Also, has anyone gone through this but still fallen pregnant? My periods are sporadic, I've only had 2 this year.

I have been having hot flashes for about 2 years off and on. I don't know of anything in particular that helps. I have heard that flax oil capsules help. I do take those regularly. Mine come for a couple of weeks then go away for a couple of months and I think I am finished, but then they come again. I have also tried a supplement from my health food store called Hot Flash. I can't remember what brand it is and I am out. It seems to help if I take it regularly.
Love,
Margaret

Jenny have you heard of Maca Powder? this might be worth trying to see if there is a difference.

There must be ways to delay menopause to a certain degree as I have an aunty who ceased menstrating and she went to my herbalist and resumed having a period again...

I used to use Maca powder back in 2000-2 hoping it would bounce me back after the physical changes my body underwent after the death of my first grandchild. I had suddenly lost   about 60% of my hair, I had a white 'handprint' of grey hair on the left side of my head, and my periods were heavier than ever before (like the days after giving birth). I can't say I felt any different using the Maca so I stopped after about 18 months.
About late 2004 I began to have very sporadic periods - I will miss 2 cycles or so, then have normal periods for 4-5 cycles.
Mid-2005 I began taking Chaste Tree tablets and that regulated my periods amazingly well (and they were lighter and less painful) but we moved state at the end of that year and I stopped taking them.
I wonder if I try them again if I will even out more with these changes?? My body *tries* to have a period now - every month I have some spotting, I still get a pre-period migraine as well as an ovulation migraine, and I still get the cramps. Occasionally I'll have a proper period, but mostly it is just a day of light spotting till the next cycle.

I grind my own flax seeds regularly, so I think that would be as good as the capsules (?)...but I'm not sure we have Hot Flash here in Australia, Margaret. Can you tell me what the ingredients are, please?

Hi Jenny,
Sorry it took me so long to get this info to you. I had to wait to go to the health food store so I could see what company it was since I was out. Here is the link:

http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1156/
Hope this helps.
Love,
Margaret

Margaret, thank you so much for going to the trouble to find this for me!
I see that it is not to be used by women who 'may' fall pregnant...I know it's a long shot, but I still occasionally ovulate and I still get the occasional period, so if there is a chance I could still fall pregnant and have one last child I'd rather not hamper it.
I see, though, that one of the ingredients is chaste tree which I had success with a few years back so I'll investigate more if this is a no-no for a hopeful pregnancy or if it may help.
Thank you!

Just thought I'd update that I started taking Chaste Tree tablets and all the hot flushes have completely disappeared! \o/

umm...

when I first read the subject line I thought, "Hey, I can see the sanitary value in a hot water toilet... didn't know that even existed..."

After eagerly looking into the thread, I'm guessing that's not what you meant by "hot flushes" though...

Obviously I am in "someone else in the this house is going to learn to properly clean at least 1 toilet" chore mode this week.
