Can we discuss this here? I did a search and couldn't find any thread on Legion of Mary. Is this the forum to introduce it, Helen?

I was wanting to mention the Legion!
I was an active member, and have recently been thinking of becoming an active member again...especially since I have 2 children who would be able to join in the junior legion as well.
Here is a wonderful website about the Legion run by Fr. Peffley and another friend of ours in Northern VA. Excellent site!

I am so glad to see this thread. I have been an active member of the Legion for about 12 years, on and off, mainly due to a few pregnancies. # of my dc and I are active again. I catually spoke to Fr. Peffley on Saturday about the Legion.
Charlotte, it's such a blessing to be able to do these works with your children. I love it!!! I can't wait to read this thread.
God bless you all.

My question is this (and I'm not trying to be a trouble maker...) Is the Legion of Mary really, truly appropriate for a mother of small children? I'm asking this question out of ignorance not malace...I looked into the Legion very, very briefly and I noticed the "outside work" drew a mother and her children outside the home on a weekly basis.
I know it is option - alternative prayers can be said but there are so many things to take mothers and dc out of the home I'm just wondering about the LM appropriatness. I wonder if the Legion isn't better for moms of grown children and men who are able to leave home more easily?
Mother's evagelization should I think begin and be primarily in the home. If she should win the world and lose her children...an unacceptable situation indeed.
What's the scoop?

Amie-
I would say that the Legion is IDEAL for moms with small/young children. Mine did EVERYTHING with me-except door to door which was done in the evening. But still, visiting nursing homes, helping with the Junior Legion, making rosaries, going for the Annual Consecration...everything. I found it was wonderful for my whole family.
I don't think I could have done it if my children could not join me...

I agree 100%. My children and I do everything together. The kids love going to the nursing home. If you saw the faces of those residents when our 4 year old walks in, or having 6 children come into your room just to say hello. Every time we go to the nursing home, I am filled with so much joy, it's hard to describe.
Another reason I really believe in taking the kids to the nursing home is, they see people there who would be considered "worthless." We have had so many "pro-life" discussions with the kids about the residents.
I was actually going to write a post on my blog about taking care of those no one wants.
I did take a leave from the Legion when I was expecting our 6th baby. I'm the V.P. of the Jrs., and I had a 2 year old and 4 year old son who would not stay quiet during the meetings. Now our 17 dd stays home with the 4 and 6 year old while the rest of us go to the meeting.
HTH.
God bless.

I know what you mean Ruth. My kids learned so much by visiting the nursing homes. Isn't it something when your little one walks up to someone and says.."would you like a Rosary?"
I had to leave the Legion 2 years ago and it's funny that this has popped up here. It has been on my mind recently since my 2 boys are able to join. Perhaps Mary is whispering in my ear.....

She seems to do that to us, doesn't she? It's such an honor to be able to do this with the children. This weekend, I was assigned to deliver the Pilgrim Virgin Mary with my children. It's such an honor to carry her with us in the car, and bring her to people's homes and pray with them. I feel so honored that she has called us to do her work.
I posted abouth it this weekend. She gave me a wonderful suprise. It brough tears to my eyes.
I am glad we're back in the Legion. You get so much from the handbook and the Alocutio. It's definately helped my spiritual life.
God bless all of you.

Concerning mothers of young ones being in the Legion....not that I have a lot of time to post but I've heard two different approaches this very month on this subject.
My older two were in the Junior Legion for a good number of years until it fizzled out. I wasn't involved because Chels and Annie were very small at the time. The women involved though were very dedicated Legionnaires and it took a lot of their time and energy.
A few weeks ago at the dance studio I ran into one of the leaders. She has a little girl my Annie's age (got pregnant for her at age 42 ) and she had to step back from her Legion activities after having her. She told me and another mom that even though being in the Legion was extremely rewarding for her and she looked forward to being active again, it was very time consuming. She said she felt she was always asking her dh if she could leave to go to a meeting or something. And she said just figuring in the commute time to and from meetings and the commradery/visitation after the meetings made for a whole night away from home. So I think that's why there aren't that many active young Legionnaires.
My dh and I have always been auxiliary members (which is a good way of being a contemplative Legionnaire ).

I think the reason why it works for our family is that I'm the VP for the Jrs. which my children attend, so that's my weekly meeting. Our 17 dd stays home with the 2 youngest. At this meeting, I'm assigned to do works with my kids, so I'm never gone in the evenings, because the kids' meeting is at 4 pm on Fridays and the the works are either Tues. at the nursing home, at 3pm, or Sat. mornings after Mass for Pilgrim Virgin. We are very blessed to have a Presidium with mostly homeschooling moms, so all 4 of us are the President or VP of the 2 Jr. Presidia.
Cay, it's so wonderful to know you and your husband are auxilliary members. Thank you for all your prayers. Your prayers are what keeps active members able to continue to do the work. I'll be thinking of you every time we're doing our Legion work.
God bless.

This is great, Cay. I never thought about it as being a contemplative Legionnaire. Here is a beautiful quote from the Legion handbook.
"Consider the generosity of the auxiliaries who have given up to the Legion part of the precious breathings of their souls. What possibilities of sanctity are in them! The Legion is under infinite debt to them. Active members and auxiliaries are, both are children of the Legion. In the soul of the auxiliary rises a great edifice of sanctity..."
God bless you and your family.

Ruth,
Thank you for sharing this. Sometimes one forgets through the years exactly why one is doing what one is doing.
This helps me to know this so much today. God love you!

I'm glad I was able to find that quote. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers daily, especially during the Rosary at our meetings.
God bless you, and your family!
Lots of love,

I'm an auxiliary member, as is my daughter Clare. My son Liam is an active member in his college praesidium. I'm so glad you brought this topic up because I am so in love with the beautiful Catena Legionis and the whole Legion vision. Just thinking about it warms my heart and saying the Tessera in the evening is a high point of the day.

I too am happy to see this topic here. The Legion of Mary is special to me even though I have never been a member. Frank Duff was my godfather's godfather. My mom and dad were members of the Legion of Mary and started a praesidium at their last parish. May God bless those of you who are members!

I have another beautiful quote about Auxiliaries from the Legion handbook : "...auxiliary membership is to the Legion what its wings are to a bird. With these wings widely expanded by possession of many auxiliaries, and beating powerfully under the rhythmic drive of their faithful prayer, the Legion can soar into the higher air of supernatural ideal and effort."
God bless all of our Auxiliaries.
