When I ponder the Nativity, I like to think of the next day... after all the wonder, the angels, the shepherds, the excitement of the birth of the Jesus... there was the next morning. They woke up, the angels were (probably) gone, it was daylight, and they had to think about things like: what's for breakfast?
God was with them in the joyfulness of the Nativity, and God was still with them (literally) the next day, when life had to continue with laundry and the census and still needing to find a place to stay.
God is always with us, through all the ups and downs...

I am thinking a lot lately about how Mary's most joyful moments with Jesus were also profoundly sorrowful. The mystery of the cross shadows the nativity. The reality for whence this baby comes is poignant. Mary suffers as she rejoices on so many occasions in her life. Her whole journey as a mother was about letting him go, leaving him to His father's plan, and witnessing in profound holiness the mystery of the salvation of the world.
For me, the joy of my own motherhood will heretofore be marked with a profound sorrow. There is some comfort in knowing that from that can be born a profoundly holy motherhood and the opportunity to witness my own children follow God's plan for their salvation.

Yes Colleen, Our Lady is such an understanding mother to us all, she has experienced everything we have in some way, particularly in sorrow.
We can never say, "does Our Lady really know what I'm going through?" , even the pain of wayward children, for the whole of mankind are those children and the salvation of each and every soul is far more precious to her than our own spiritual solicitude for our own children, how the loss of a soul must pierce her heart!
The rosary is full of those moments, when we say, "Mary you understand, really, really understand!" So at every moment in meditation during the rosary there is the perfect example we need as mothers.
At the moment I really want to reflect upon that, I want MY heart to imitate Mary's as impossible as that seems, I really need that grace! So I start each mystery with, "Mary, give me a heart like yours...a heart that..." this is helping me in my meditation as well, seeing Mary's virtues and reflecting on my weaknesses I hope to overcome through the graces of this most beautiful prayer.

I think here of the poverty, the making do the best you can under difficult circumstances and then you find that there is great meaning in that pain/rejection (being turned back from the inns) the weariness/the need to be somewhere that you know is drawing on all your resources/strength. But in all of that, the perfect moment comes and with it ~ awe and peace ~ awe, this child, God made man and peace, God's will prevailed and is just as it should be.
