Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jennifer (Mackfam) made a wonderful suggestion of dedicating the month prior to July 13th to spiritual reading. (July 13th is 33 days before the Assumption.)

I'm just about to go around the house gathering a few books to read this month. I want to find a book I picked up at the Franciscans of the Immaculate. They recently published a book by Fr. Neubert on the Priesthood and Mary. (Fr. Neubert also wrote My Ideal, Jesus Son of Mary.)

Let's use this thread to post about the books we're reading. It's inspiring and encouraging to learn about new books. Thanks for helping me to get organized!

I have had Humility of Heart in my book basket since April and have not gotten around to it. It looks like great fodder for spiritual growth, written in a similar style to Imitation of Christ. But I just couldn't get my pregnant brain to go there. Maybe now is the time.

I am wrapping up Mother Teresa's Lessons of Love and Secrets of Sanctity by Susan Conroy. Ms. Conroy came to our church several weeks ago and her talk about the time she spent with Mother Teresa was very inspiring and emotional.

Her book has been a good easy read. It has some wonderful quotes. When I'm done I'm going to skim back through to find them all.

I am reading William Thomas Walsh's biography on St Theresa of Avila, she is my confirmation saint. It is a VERY thick book (A real Walsh book! ) I am reading it very slowly which is unusual for me, I want to really understand her sanctity and spirituality and being Carmelite, very Marian orientated.

AFter going around the house locating books, I realize part of the problem I've been having with sustained spiritual reading is that I'm trying to read too many books. I need to stick with one and finish it.

Or at least three... and stick with them.

I've been flipping through Treatise on Prayer and Medittation by St. Peter of Alcantara. I've read a few pages here and there. I found this book at the Carmelite monastery. It caught my interest because St. Peter was a Franciscan who counseled the Carmelite St. Teresa of Avila.

The priestly ministry book interests me as a way of tapping into the Year of the Priest.

Kacky, I've heard great things about many of the books dealing with Mother Teresa's spirituality. The combination she was able to achieve between a prayerful life and the active ministry must be very helpful read for mothers.

Colleen, I think Humility of Heart is another book that I jumped around in a lot. Keep me posted on your read! Direct me to the best pages and I can check them out. Oh right...I'm trying not to jump around so much.

Now, I should sign off and get reading.

How are you all planning to fit the spiritual readings into your day?

I tend to read at night when the house is quiet. I'm not good at getting up before everyone in the morning.

I also put whatever I'm reading in the diaper bag to take along when we go out. I whip it out whenever I'm at a red light. My oldest dd, who sits in the passenger seat has gotten use to saying "GREEN" when the light changes

When Helen and I started talking together about sharing some of our challenges and encouragement along the journey towards reconsecration, I mentioned that I had started gathering a basket of Marian books that I meant to use as helps during my Marian retreat.

I am currently reading Dietrich von Hildebrand's Transformation in Christ.

My Marian book basket contained several books, but I've narrowed them down to reflect a simple plan that will enable me to focus (I hope):
:: Divine Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary (I'm feeling drawn to this one...)
:: Immaculate Conception and the Holy Spirit

I might read one...or both. We'll see what life has in store.

My usual reading time is the bath, it is quiet and private. Also, 5mins before bed, but that's fine, I think the last things you focus on before sleeping are retained well, even if I read only a page then, it is something that keeps the book moving daily.

Like Kacky, if I'm out and know that I'll have time to spare, I'll take it then. I was at the hospital for 2 hours earlier this week with my sister, while she was having a procedure, I read in the waiting room.

Jennifer, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on Transformation in Christ. I'm facinated since I've never read his works, but his wife Alice has been intrigued, she speaks so highly of him as do some of our modern popes.

I really like reading Dietrich von Hildebrand. I was attracted to him first through his wife, Alice. I read By Love Refined and then The Privilege of Being a Woman, both by Alice von Hildebrand, and really found myself drawn in by her expression of philosophy. Then, I read The Soul of a Lion: The Life of Dietrich von Hildebrand also by Alice von Hildebrand, and I wanted to read something by this great man. I've read Transformation in Christ before, but I really needed to re-read it! I find I really enjoy the way he communicates in his writing, and the book itself is extraordinary - it is a goldmine! If I don't make it out of this book for my preparation, it will serve me well. I think it will provide enough for Our Lady to effect change.

I grab snatches of time throughout the day to read...but I enforce an afternoon quiet time while the baby naps and that is my most concentrated reading time.

Wanted to add that I hope to involve the children by making use of some of the Marian hymns, prayers, and devotionals in Maiden and Mother.

I've been reading Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict, but it is slow going as well. However, I'd like to finish it this summer; so, this would be good motivation.

I plan as a part of preparation for my consecration to pick up Introduction to the Devout Life again. I did his, oh, I don't know what you call it, but he has several meditations and a dedication that you sign and renew each year along the same lines as St. Louis though not specifically Marian.

I think I will also revisit sections of Fire Within for some Avillian inspiration

And I just ordered My Ideal and some excerpts from the Glories of Mary.

In one sense, reading some many things at once is overwhelming. However, I find when I am approaching prayer and devotion as I should, many times these different sources dovetail in an inspired way!

I wanted to add that I've been using Divine Intimacy as my devotional, but I forgot to switch to the Marian ones at the start of May and then got behind while traveling. So, my plan is to use those daily during the time leading up to consecration!

I just joined the Forums but have lurked here for a few months. I love Hidden Treasure posts and am interested in joining you all in the consecration to our Lady.

A book I just picked up to begin reading yesterday is The Fulfillment of all Desire by Ralph Martin. (I can't figure out how to link to it on Amazon!) I've only read the first chapter so far but it seems packed full of beautiful things to help on the way to holiness. He uses quotes from seven of the Doctors of the Church: St. Therese; St. Bernard; St. Augustine; St. Catherine of Siena; St. Francis de Sales; St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross.

That does sound like a great book...

For links...There's a tool bar above the space in which you write replies. The one with a globe and paperclip helps you to include a link in your post. Click the globe/paperclip button and then you'll be prompted to fill in the name of your link. The next prompt will be for the url.

The tool bar has a few other options as well including bullet points. I needed to have the tool bar pointed out to me as well when I started here. We must be like minded

Another new thread to share quotes:Inspirational quotes

I'm not trying to disuade from posting to this thread. Please continue to share your books. But if you're ready to share more in depth from your book use the other thread.

I'm hoping organizing the threads will give our discussions longevity.

Thank you Helen for the tip! I think I've figured it out (now hopefully I've figured out how to quote!) So here's the link for the book I'm reading: The Fulfillment of All Desire

A really nice devotional book is
Devotion to Our Lady.

It is full of examples of how the saints practiced their devotion to Our Heavenly Mother. The book has many examples of traditional devotion.

All Generations Shall Call Me Blessed is more of a study book, a guide of the Virgin's place in scripture.

Sometimes I need a book for my head and othertimes I need a book for my heart.
