Does anyone have any advice about sewing thermal Roman shades? We live in Texas and our master bedroom really heats up in the summer. My husband said that his mom would make shades with a layer of batting in them to keep the heat in and the cold out and I wonder if this would do the trick for our problem. Although, I did find some reasonably priced foam-backed thermal shades online. I don’t think I could make these for less or if the foam backing would be preferable to the batting idea. Any thoughts?

The foam batting would be better insulation and more light-blocking, IMHO.

Have you seen the shade fabric by Warm Window? It is rated at an R-value of about 30, I think, and is easy to sew with. A bit expensive, but will really keep heat out and cold, for that matter. I wish i could link it, but search "Warm Window" and I'm sure you'll find it.
