In regards to aprons, I'm really liking the oilcloth idea. At Elizabeth Margaret, they have really nice looking aprons. If you click on the kitchenware section, you'll find them. They are a little pricey, but considering you don't have to wash them, it's not bad. Of course, if you know how to sew, they'd be a snap. I bought some oilcloth last year and made a really cute beach bag out of it. I'd love to get some more and make kid aprons for crafts or cooking. Maybe I'll start searching google for good prices on oilcloth!

Does anyone have a pattern for an older fashioned kind of apron. I am looking for the kind that goes over the shoulders and not a chef style. My grandmotehr had them and I see some local Amish with them. Yes I could ask them but I do not know any Amish women and would feel too bold to approach a stranger.

Viv,if you go to ebay and type in "retro apron pattern", there are a couple there. I think they are Simplicity and are called "vintage". I love these kind! I wish I had my grandmother's old aprons! Have you ever heard of a store called Anthropoligie? I'm not sure if that's how you spell it, but they have many retro style aprons. I'll see if they have a website and post the link.

Hey, Viv. I found the website for Anthropologie. If you click on home decor, then kitchen, you'll see aprons. THey have some really nice old fashioned style aprons.

Elizabeth, it's all a part of the frustrated seamstress in me. I love all these and think "wow! I could make that for so much less!" My dh keeps trying to get me to start sewing to sell. I'd love to but can't get my mind around exactly when I would do it. That probably makes many of you laugh since you have at least 2x as many dc as I do! I wonder, too why I don't have more time! I think it's a matter of prioritizing, what do you think?

The Vermont Country Store has a pretty large selection. I have a few of these. I also have a pattern for this Edwardian apron which I have not made yet. I like it because it covers such a big part of your clothes. eBay also has a lot of aprons but very hit or miss.
I often forget I am wearing an apron when I run out to the garage. That is where my big freezer is, I have always thought the neighbors got a big kick out of seeing me in my skirts and aprons. You know, like I just fell out of a "way back machine". A few weeks ago I ran out and my next door neighbor was wearing one too. Over her jeans. She saw me look at her and was embarrassed. She was trying to explain that she was frying and didn't want to grease up her clothes. I told her she was preaching to the choir.
See, I'm not as weird as I thought.

But it is a way back machine of choice.
I am so thankful that I can make those choices. I am especially thankful after I pull a load of formerly filthy barn sheets out of the washer, clean and white. I choose to hang it on the line to dry, but the heavy work is done by machine.
BTWI think thing like aprons almost confuse people in our use and dispose world.

I learned to cook using aprons. When we bake cookies as a family, the kids use aprons, also. I never think anything of it...I can dress for my party and cook and clean without ruining my clothes. And I use full, longer aprons for both skirts and pants. Good or bad clothes, I am stain prone, so I'm just being prudent. I use the aprons for all my crafts -- decorating Easter eggs, Ukrainian eggs, calligraphy, painting, etc.
I also have another reason to use aprons more frequently -- my son's allergies. If I'm cooking something that he can't be exposed to, I use an apron, and remove it and immediately put it in the wash, so he's not exposed to it, but I don't have to change my outfit!
I guess I never think of it being retro, or a throw back. Aprons are functional, and can be a feminine accessory, but men and chefs use them, too.
Now, when I was in the convent (for all of 3 months), we used aprons and also some sleeve covers -- very simple idea. Kind of a muff pattern, or just the bottom half of a sleeve with elastic on both openings so covers your long sleeves, but also everything can be pushed up on your arms and stays up. I keep meaning to make those, because they were a great idea. I think Jo in Little Women used these when she wrote.
I like that Edwardian style apron, also the other retro aprons. I'm with Courtney, that you look at things and say "I can make that for less" but I end up not buying it, and then not making it! But I'm good at finding them!

I found some more oilcloth aprons here Down Home Girl. They had matching rubber gloves too! But I refrained...

My DH bought himself some aprons at Williams Sonoma several years back when he was in a chef mode. Yes, I agree they are functional. I've ruined a couple of shirts recently and am trying to get back in the habit of wearing aprons when I'm in the kitchen!

Speaking of aprons - just tonight read a picture book that features a grandmother who wears an apron. Saturday Sancocho
I know I was more aware of it since this thread and there are obvioulsy many books with aprons. But it was clearly part of her lifestyle in this one. She is wearing it in the house. The text mentions her taking it off when they get ready to go to market. Then she is wearing it again later when they start cooking. I thought it was a cute and liked the apron tie-in.

I love all the apron links you have been sharing! I bought myself an apron at World Market last week. I really like the oil cloth aprons. Well, I'm no langer collecting diaper bags , maybe I will move onto aprons .

Simplicity has a few, but the one I really like, 8372 seems to be discontinued. It's not very old though, so some shops may still have it. If you want one and can't find a copy let me know and I'll send you a copy of mine.

Another note on the apron theme. If you are adding to your apron wardrobe, include a dressy apron for company besides the practical functional ones. After you've dirtied up the functional one doing the cleaning and cooking, before the guests arrive you change your clothes and add the dressy apron, to add the final touches (remove foods from oven, lay out the appetizers) and even when guests arrive you look nice, with no apologies of having the apron.

The first thing Thomas (6), Maggie (5) and I did at the beginning of the school year (eons ago, it seems) was to decorate aprons for each of us so when we cooked, painted or otherwise played in "gook", we could stay relatively clean.
We got the blank canvas aprons at Michaels or ACMoore and decorated them with fabric paints -- lots of glitter and goops of paint but the kids sure did enjoy it!
Of course, when John-Paul became aware of what we had done (somewhere around his 2nd birthday) we had to make him one -- so in his Christmas stocking we had a special "JP" apron!

Well, I'm a bit behind on my newspaper reading, but I picked up the Wednesday "Food" section of the Washington Post and there was a short paragraph on Aprons in the "Shopping Cart" section. Uncanny how things pop up. Casual cooks and domestic goddesses alike will enjoy sporting the stylish and flirty hostess aprons from California-based company Jessie Steele. Slaving over a hot stove has never been more cool. (My emphasis and emoticon added!) As featured on Oprah -- I can't believe I'm actually doing something "COOL" -- I've always been the geek and uncool!!!!
