I have recently bought some lovely Our Lady of Guadalupe 'panels' from Spotlight - I have bought a few to squirrel away for future craft ideas ...but I am not that crafty...but I want to be!

I would like to use a panel each for my two girls, to help them make a patchwork quilt and pillow for their beds, using the panels as the middle piece with patchwork squares all around - I can't sew, but I do own a sewing machine and overlocker that I have never had the time to utilize. Then there is an option of handsewing...but is that too hard? Can anyone direct me to a good website that can show me the basics of approaching this, or do I need to be thinking of learning this somewhere, through lessons in my town?

Such a babe in the woods, am I! Any thoughts much appreciated.

What a beautiful piece of fabric! I'm envious.

I think you should have no trouble with the sewing machine but you may want to use some scrap material to practice with if you're unsure. I'm "sewing machine challenged" myself although it is one of my resolutions to overcome this this year.

Personally, I find hand sewing easier but it's definitely more time consuming and I find it can be harder to get the lines as straight as a machine can.

Might I suggest joining Michele's sewing group?

Anne

This is unbelievable!! Do you know is it just a Brisbane thing? They would be worthwhile for me to drive an hour for.

What great designs! Quilting is not that hard, I taught myself with an OLD singer. Really it is just straight line sewing. The trick is getting corners to line up. I started with Teach Yourself Machine Piecing and Quilting by Debra Wagner but I am sure there are many more excellent books to get yourself started. With such a colorful center panel you might surround it in an accent color sashing (frame) and use a simple 9 or 4 patch block around it. They are nice because you cut long strips of your colors i.e. two pink and an ivory, sew them length way together and then cut slices rather than piecing tiny squares. Don't be intimidated! Good luck!

Thanks for your postings! - can I ask another question? Is it silly to think of sewing some beading onto the picture itself? Or is this impractical, or would it get damaged with washing, etc?

Sent you are pm Erin - it is nice, isn't it? - trouble is you might have to travel more than an hour around your area!

I know this is not the material that you have, pluse this project is much bigger, but here is a picture to inspire you . It's not a very good picture, but I like how they pieced the small blocks around it to be reminiscent of stain glass....

Oh Jen.......I'm speechless ......that is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

Where do I start?...Do you have any close up shots to share as well? Are they all Our Lady of Guadalupe images or different images of Our Lady? Did you buy the images of Our Lady or have you designed and created them yourself, was a kit or did you design everything from scratch?

I suppose that would have taken you a long time to create!

Thank you so much for sharing that ..hope to hear more!

I am feeling . I did not make the quilt, although I do have the fabric and the directions . You can actually buy the kit from equilter but it is expensive:

Our Lady of Guadalupe Kit

I just did a search on equilter for "Guadalupe" and it came up with a few items -- including what I think is yours!
Here

It won't let me create a link to the search, but try it yourselves to see a couple of others, including this one

Jen don't be - I didn't read your posting properly but I can't thank you enough for posting all that - thank you for the kit link - because I absolutely love that quilt (would love it for our own bed) and kits WITH instructions don't frighten me as MUCH as doing everything from scratch (do sound like someone out of my depth or what?)

Jen,

Thank you for posting this! I was hoping I could find one of those panels as I would love to make a quilt for my dd Margaret whose birthday is Dec. 12th! (Obviously I have plenty of time )

I also LOVE the quilt of our Lady! I was thinking one could make a quilt like that by printing off various pictures of Our Lady onto cloth printer fabric (I've done this before using this product ) and piecing it together.

Oh and yesterday when I saw this thread I did a search too and though I didn't find the panel (so glad you did though!) I did find this which I also think is very pretty. In fact I have the perfect window for it!

God bless,
