We made these today- they turned out so cute and smell *sooo* good. My dh came home and was excited thinking I'd made a pie, but it was only the ornaments drying in the oven.
I used this recipe:
1 cup of applesauce (I usually buy the natural kind, but for these I bought the kind with added sugar since I read this makes the ornaments hold together better)
1 cup of cinnamon (purchased in bulk at Whole Foods for $2)
1 Tbs. white glue
1 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp cloves (you can add whatever spices you wish)
Then for fun we added a bunch of crystal glitter to add sparkle.
Mix the dough thoroughly. Ours was a little sticky and wet but held together well. We rolled it out to 1/4 inch thickness between sheets of wax paper, then cut shapes with cook cutters. I transferred the shapes to cookie sheets lined with parchment paper and then made holes for string using a shish-kabob stick. I baked them at 150 for about 3 hours total, flipping them over half way. They can also be air dried, but I've read that can take several days.
When dry you can decorate them with squeeze paint or glitter glue, or you can leave them as is. They smell very good- supposedly they will retain their scent for a few years.
The whole process was much easier than I thought, and the kids did well with this. It was fun! Can't wait to hang them on the tree. Plus I kept thinking they would be great for making Gingerbread boys to go along with "The Gingerbread Baby" by Jan Brett

Hi Melinda, we made some too! Except ours are just cinnamon and applesauce. And we didn't bake them, just let them dry on wax paper for 2 days. They smell awesome, don't they?

We made these last year, and I just wanted to let you know that this year they are still hard and still smell delicious! We live in a very humid climate I wasn't sure they would last, but they did!
And Melinda, you're brilliant! What a great tie-in with "Gingerbread Baby" without having MORE cookies to eat!

The best thing about these ornaments was exactly that- they made the house smell great, and there was no temptation to eat them!

Really, thanks for posting the recipes. We are trying to come up with a few more Jesse ornaments and this may be one of those projects after our oldest gets home. We'll just have to put them very high up on the tree or the dog will try to eat them.

Crystal glitter is a clear type of glitter that looks like little diamonds or glitter slivers, for lack of a better word. A friend gave me a box of crafting supplies and there was a large bottle of crystal glitter in it, so I thought I'd try it out. It gives the same effect as a gingerbread cookie dusted with granulated sugar. The ornaments are a dark brown color, so the glitter gives them some sparkle.
