I know... you would think I would have better things to do with my time... ... but I am so excited that I have won my battle with natural peanut butter at last!
I try to buy all natural PB, the kind that is just ground up peanuts with no extra oils or sugar. This is also the kind that separates in the jar and has to be stirred and then refrigerated- not to mention the kind that can turn hard and impossible to spread when cold.
So this is how it would go: I open the jar, try to stir in the oil with a butter knife or spoon, oil would spill out and get all over my hands, the counter, etc. I would stir and stir and make little progress, then get mad and give up and stick the jar in the fridge and hope that no one wanted a PBJ soon.
I was starting to hate peanut butter- but no more.
Now when I open a new jar I dump it all out into a large bowl, mix it up in the bowl, and then put it back in the jar. This is a beautiful thing: no oil spills over and it takes half the time of my old method. But the very best thing is that my PB is thoroughly mixed this way and stays nice and soft in the fridge. It spreads so easily- what a joy.
And do I need a life or what??

Good job! it is so much easier to use when it's properly mixed.

I have an old hand mixer with dough hooks. I put one hook on the mixer and put it in the jar. As long as you hold onto the jar firmly, there are no spatters. My children put a hole in a paper plate to make a spatter guard, but I like to live dangerously.

Good idea!
I've seen these before, too.

We were going to buy one of these, but we buy the bigger jars from Costco or BJs, and they don't fit! That was how I got the idea about the dough hook in the hand-mixer, though.

If you are the only one that touches the jars of peanut butter and remember. If you store them upside down for the first couple of uses it can be easier to mix in the jar.
What happens is when you keep it upside down the oil goes to the top, which is really the bottom of the jar. When you flip it over to use the the first time all the oil is on the bottom and you can mix it without spilling it all.
However, I would imagine that your method is more fool proof every time!

Avoiding the Play-Doh PB: don't store it in the fridge. If you get through your jar in less than 3 weeks, natural PB is fine at room temp.
I get small jars on sale frequently so this is never a problem for us.

My mouth is watering thinking of that yummy natural peanut butter. We never have it in the house - 3 kids with peanut allergy.

I 2nd the store upside down and you wont spill the oil.
Knowloveserve- I didn't know that you could store in the pantry. Our PB never makes it an entire week
