We desperately need a new vacuum cleaner. I'd love to hear recommendations if you have one you love.
We have mainly hardwoods and area rugs.

It isn't for everyone, but we went with a high end shop vac. The European models are very quiet. We do a lot of home projects, and my boys are outside a lot, and between the clay mud, sawdust, and drywall dust that had ruined our previous vacuums, we decided we needed a workhorse. Ours is a Festool brand. Dh is a woodworker and already owned a larger model for use with his tools, so we knew it was an excellent vacuum. He bought me the smaller model and the floor attachments. It has all the crevice tools and such, just no beater. It has a hepa filter as well. We don't have many rugs, so the lack of beater hasn't been a problem. The wife of the man who sold dh the vacuum had done the same but with a different though similar German brand.

I'm a Rainbow fan. My parents had one and are on their second in their 38 years of marriage (first one last 25+ years and was still running when they got the new one-just the new one had much better suction). I had spent a fourth of what the Rainbow cost us on sweepers in a matter of 9 years of marriage. To me it won't cost me anymore in the long run, but it was a HUGE investment up front (ours cost $2000 and I'm sure they are more now). I have no idea where you buy a Rainbow as they were still doing that as traveling salesman when we bought ours several years ago. They can handle wood and carpet (two different attachments) and it comes with lots of tools to clean anything. My only complaint is that it takes up a lot of space to store and I hate dumping the water outside in the winter.

We have a Kirby, and they guarantee we'll never have to buy another. We used to have to buy vacuums about every other year (lots of gravel & sand around here) and this one has lasted almost 14 years. They'r expensive, and I"m typically a cheapskate, but it is probably the best purchase I've ever made.

We have an Electrolux, and ditto. We went through a lot of cheaper vacuums before deciding that we just had to shell out for quality. Ours is an upright with a beater-bar function that can be turned on or off -- we have wood floors throughout but also a number of fairly heavy rugs, so it is nice to have the "carpet" feature.
Ours also has lots of attachments, including a really powerful upholstery attachment (good for mattresses, to get out dust mites, as well as the usual sofa stuff).
Anyway, recommend!

I would either go for a shop vac (that quiet one sounds nice!), or a Miele. Seems like you either buy a "disposable" that is cheap but doesn't last long or you invest a lot of money into a better machine.
My family has been Miele crazy for a while now (more than 10 yrs), and all of us w/ hard floors love them. I also have some carpet, so I got the motorized head as well. They are sturdy and among the quietest on the market.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Miele. I love how well it works, how quiet it is, etc. I hate how expensive replacement parts are. My boys have broken the "twister parquet" attachment (for the hardwood floors) twice - once from standing on it, once from banging it against the floor in anger - and each time it was $85 to replace. Also, the powered wand stopped working once and was $120 to replace.
I don't know if all the high-end makes are that way or not.
