Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you have a nonspending day ? This idea intrigues me... I have seen it mentioned now several times on different blogs. The idea is simple: pick a dedicated day during the week to have as your non-spending day.

Some people have two days a week dedicated to spending no money. Some people take it up a notch and will have a no-spend month (only buying sheer necessities such as gas, milk, fresh produce).

I can see how this would really stretch the budget. I can also say I tried it this week and failed . Sunday seems like a an easy day to do this, but I buy the Sunday paper for the coupons, so that is right out. And then during the week I tend to buy things as I am out and around to avoid making extra trips out later. This week I had to order a couple of books for school on line, and then yesterday I remembered that my MIL has a birthday coming up, so we stopped at a store in between ballet and fencing.

Argh... must try to do better next week. It seems like it shouldn't be hard at all. Hmm... maybe I should have 1-2 designated spending days only?

I like the idea! I will have to watch my spending activities and see if there is a pattern.   Yesterday I did not spend anything.   My husband is out of town and has the only car, so there was not much temptation (we walked to the post office, which is free), and I had already done my Amazon order earlier in the week -- for my son's birthday which is tomorrow.    Monday was a big spending day, since I wrote a check for 2 cords of firewood.

I think I will try to have designated spending days -- that seems like a good way to get more conscious of where the $$ are going.

I like the idea, too!

Melinda, can you pay a month at a time to have just the Sunday paper delivered to you? Sunday does seem like an easy to do this.

I would love to do this, but the Sunday paper in my town is not considered a prime target for most advertisers, so the coupon inserts are half of what the papers in bigger towns get. I have to go out to a stand or store to buy the paper from a neighboring, bigger town. Otherwise, it's slim pickens for coupons. I also tend to buy two papers if the coupons are good. And here is the real downer: I can subscribe to the big town's Sunday only paper, but they will not send me an edition with coupons!

So, Sunday is out for me. On Tuesday I usually do a milkfruit/veggie run to the grocery store. On Wed we pay our music lesson teacher each week- she prefers this to paying for a month at a time, so Wed is out. On Saturday I do my main grocery shopping .

Then I am such a dork... somehow if I break up my Amazon purchases into two or three orders, it doesn't feel like I am spending as much. I really just need to make a list and do a bulk order on one day, instead of ordering a book on Monday and then vitamins or whatever on Thursday.
I think that will also help me be more accountable.

But hey- I just realized that today is Friday and I haven't spent anything yet. This could be my day!

I've never had a black out on spending day. But there was a long time that I did almost all errands (and so spending) on a single day because it was easier for me to dedicate one day a week to being out with all the kids rather than trying to run out with everyone in tow multiple days.

But I don't see why it couldn't be Sunday for you knowing that the only thing you'd buy is a newspaper. Or Wednesday, knowing that you'll only be paying the music teacher (you're not saving any money by paying her once a month to have a no spending day after all).

Do it so that it fits your life. Shopping while you're already out can save money on fuel.. if you're good at not buying little extras at the store.. if you buy lots of little extras then the more you're in the store the less frugal it is

Well I don't spend when I don't go to town, so I'm only spending one day a week. Does that count?

Hmm.... YES
You are the Frugal Queen, Erin

Jodie- everything you said makes perfect sense. I just get some type of frugal boost being able to say I had a spend-free day. Pride probably has something to do with it. ... and also a desire to spend more wisely.

Anyway- I made it through yesterday without spending anything, so I was happy
