Every drawer in my kitchen is a junk drawer! I don't want to be disorganized anymore! I have a silverware drawer but how should I organize my others? What do you have in your kitchen drawers and how do you have them organized? Unfortunately, I know this more of a housekeeping issue because when I take the time to clean them out; most of the items in them can be thrown away! At this point it is just overwhelming!

I like stuff I use for cooking (like stove top stuff) near the stove.. and baking/mixing stuff near other baking mixing stuff.. and then I consider 2 things.. is it sharp? most sharp things are used for cooking so it would go with those.. and where will it fit.. I have 6 drawers in my kitchen.. one is towels and trivets, one is potatoes, one is storage bags and such, and one is cutting boards and hot pads.. the other two are very different in size from each other.. which is why I apply that last "where will it fit" because some things won't fit in the less deep drawer.

We recently moved to a much smaller space with a tiny kitchen so I spent lots of time thinking about organization. First, there are many great ideas online. I did many searches on Google Images and Pinterest looking for ideas about how to organize our kitchen so I recommend that you start there.

Junk drawers are a killer. First, in theory, no one should ever have a junk drawer. If you need it, it's not junk and if you don't need it then you should get rid of it. (yes I know easier said than done) Second, if you do need it then it should have a dedicated place.

There are small containers of multiple sizes that are intended to be used in kitchen drawers and the Container Store has spring loaded panels that can put into drawers to create different areas for things. Some people also use tension curtain rods in drawers to divide things too.

However, don't fall into the "everything can be organized perfectly" trap. I saw someone online refer to "Organization Porn" which describes online pictures of the perfectly organized spaces that we aspire to but can't ever seem to accomplish. Many times those spaces are custom designed. And how often do you see the picture from six months later? What if they get one new spice or spoon, where will it go? You have to build give into your system.

I think another good thing to do is to consider if something in a drawer can go on a shelf or be hung on the wall. The temptation with drawers it to put things in there and forget about them. You can buy Magnetic strips to hang on the wall at Ikea for knives.

I have a junk drawer in the kitchen. Technically it's the pen and pencils, scissors, tape, glue sticks and then whatever little things that have no home. I hate the thing, but if I didn't have a drawer, it would be on my counters. Trick is to keep culling the contents.
