Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

admission is free this weekend (Nov. 9-11).
Free National Park Day.

That is Saturday to Monday (Veteran's Day), so I wanted to get this post up in case anyone wanted to plan an outing for this weekend. You know- combine hiking (great frugal hobby) with free admission.

The National Parks site has a nice teacher's section. I like the teaching with historical places units.

In my neck of the woods, we'll have free admission to the local aquarium, plus the local battleship. The crowds can get crazy at these two on free days, though. The parks seem like a better bet to me- lots of space for everyone.

Supposedly my grocery store (Harris Teeter) has King Arthur flour on sale this week for $2.99 per five pound bag- a fantastic price. If so, I am planning to stock up!

Oh I gotta tell you... I've been ordering books for Christmas gifts and I've been mainly ordering used copies (get more that way) but I try and be picky and get fairly good copies still. So..

I ordered Strega Nona's Gift used.. about 1/3 less than new.

It got here yesterday. Not only is it in good shape, it looks brand new AND it's a *signed* copy.

You scored!!
Love getting used books like that. I, too, almost always ordered used books- even if I am giving them as a gift (though I usually only give used books to immediate family who know me... ). I especially love when they are signed by the author or have some other inscription.

We've been ordering used copies for a few years now and I've only ever been burnt the once. and when I wrote and expressed my unhappiness they refunded the book cost (alas not postage which is always much dearer)

I am starting to enjoy sites like this one that list daily free ebooks that can be downloaded to a kindle, smart phone or tablet.

This week I downloaded some gems- one called "Homeschooling through the Holidays" and another on couponing, which has been fun to read.

I am finding that some of these ebooks are short, fun reads, and they are perfect for reading at practices, in waiting rooms, etc.

Some of the free recipe books have to die for pictures!

Sew Mama Sew is having a handmade craft round up this month. Each day they post a series of projects, all with a given theme (gifts for tweens, gifts for techno geeks, gifts for kids- some awesome Star Wars stuff in that one).

I am loving this- I have seen some really awesome and new-to-me ideas.
I like the Scrappy Shoelaces for Tweens,   reindeer munch mix that would be fun to make, and a Star Wars quilt. Each day also has some fun printables, like gift tags and binary gift paper for geeks.

A lot of these projects look fairly quick, so there is time before the holidays to make them. The shoe laces are on my list for this weekend.
