My friend, who's expecting their sixth, has a lot of allergies including: gluten(including corn), soy, milk, eggs, nuts, bananas, coconut, and most fresh veggies. So this eliminates so many of the most common sources of protein one would use to support growing baby. I'm hoping those of you who have experience with food allergies in your families will have ideas of foods she may try. She eats a good amount of meats, but they sit like a lead ball in her stomach right now, and she needs some good ideas to vary her diet.

She can't have most grains, but she can eat millet bagels, and other gluten, corn and soy free bread products. She eats some fruits and veggies, but is also allergic to a number of them when eaten fresh. She is just so discouraged, as her diet is extremely limited right now, she already gets so sick during pregnancy as it is, like me, and she worries that she needs to get enough nutrients to grow this little one healthily.

TIA for any and all ideas!

Can she have quinoa? Excellent protein there and it's really versatile... you can make it with honey and cinnamon and call it breakfast. Use it as a pasta alternative. Many, many good things can be made from quinoa... (To avoid feeling foolish, it's pronounced KEEN-WAH; the lady at the store gave me a funny look the first time I asked where to find the QUIN-OH-UH.

Also, SUNFLOWER SEEDS!!! Tremendous bang for your protein buck there! I keep a container full of these for my protein needs.

And it's kinda spendy, but canned salmon is a great protein source too... Costco sells a wild canned salmon that is super yummy...

Is it all milk or cow's milk? I know some people who are allergic to cow's milk can manage goat's milk.. and that would give her the option of both milk and cheese.

I like smoothies made with frozen bananas, coconut milk, and some other fruit, though, I will sometimes just add cocoa for a malty smoothie. I will also add coconut flour for added protein as an alternative to nut butter.

I was eating egg, wheat, and dairy free for my nursing son. Protein was my hardest thing, so I have much empathy! Stay ahead of the nausea, and keep eating protein before feeling bad.

I find continually that grains and beans and nuts do not sustain me in keeping my blood sugar high enough. I have to eat more and more often when I use that route for protein.

You didn't list fish or shellfish, so I hope this will work.

It's more expensive, of course, but I found smoked wild salmon (or lox) was a really good for breakfast. (any time, but a nice breakfast.)

Trader Joes has nice organic beef jerky, a little tough, but I'm pretty sure it would be safe. It has been a lifesaver for me at times for a high protein snack.

I found I crave sardines in mustard sauce when I'm pregnant. I know you gotta get past the 1st trimester sometimes to eat it. But that packs a lot of protein. Also don't forget canned tuna and canned wild salmon.

I also would make a baked ham and eat some of that for my protein at breakfast. Or leftover hamburgers. I admit to never eating chicken at breakfast. I guess that's where I drew the line.

Getting a good source for pork, beef and chicken also makes a huge difference.

I was going to suggest jerky, too - Dancing Daughter is working on boosting protein and has found she enjoys turkey jerky as a small snack. (Beef is fine, too, but we are not accustomed to eating it, so turkey works better for her. There are pork jerkys on the market, too.)

Quinoa takes spices nicely, if your friend can tolerate them - there are recipes out there for Moroccan-style quinoa, for example, or it can be simply steamed with meat broth or water...if she could tolerate the quinoa, it would not have to taste the same at every meal.

I don't like eating too much sandwich meat, but she might check Hormel Naturals Deli Sandwich Meats which list all the ingredients, there is no contact with other dairy, and no MSG or gluten.

Oh, I forgot to list bananas and coconut on the things she can't eat! All the alternative milks are out for her, she can't have almonds, or coconut, and rice milk has soy lecithin, which she can't have.

Yes, protein is so hard to switch to when you've always eaten a pretty much typical diet. I really feel for her. Protein is a HUGE necessity in pregnancy. I can really feel my need for it this time around. I feel a little better when I really keep up on it.

Do you ladies know if the jerkies you refer to have any soy? I know a lot of meat things like that have soy added, which is a definite thing she can't have.

Unfortunately, she can't have tuna. She may be able to eat salmon.

A funny little aside on the tuna, when she came to her husband's family's home for the first time they served tuna, which she never could stomach from her childhood, and she, wanting to be gracious of course making that first impression, had to try to choke it down gracefully. It's much funnier when she tells it, I can just picture her trying to be friendly, and gracious/gracefully eating, while trying not to look ill.

I'll have to remind her about the lunch meats you mention, Jenn. We talked about them a long time ago, and I don't know if she remembers them.

Thanks ladies for these ideas. Keep them coming!

For deli meat, Bjs sells Applegate deli meats at a reasonable price. It is allergen free, and I always felt pretty safe eating it while pregnant. Salami makes a nice snack that is a change from regular meats.

How is she getting fats? I would think that would help in digesting some of the meat that is sitting so heavy. Perhaps she could eat a good quality ghee? I know most who can't eat dairy can eat ghee. When I was on an elimination diet, I kept baked sweet potato and turkey luncheon meat in the fridge and would cut up both and sautee them with salt and pepper and coconut oil (olive would work) for an easy hot meal. It tasted good even if unconventional, and it was filling but not heavy.

Poor thing! She must be starving! I have no advice but If I were her, I would find somebody to help me get rid of these alergies. If she wants the phone number of an excellent doctor who does phone consultations, pm me.

Pilgrim, how is she doing? I was thinking about the Coconut thing. Is she definitely tested as allergic, or is this a precautionary approach putting it in the "tree nuts" category? I ask that because it isn't necessarily counted as a tree nut.

We have almost the exact same list and then some...including all poultry, sunflower seeds....and most fresh fruit and veggies. I hope she can do sunflower seeds...my kids can’t eat it, but I eat a crunchy sunflower seed butter I get on Amazon, and it is amazing!!! My kids are okay with it in the kitchen, but would not be okay with nut butters.

Quinoa is a good choice, it is technically a seed I believe. I did have a massive reaction to it after having eaten it for a few years....not sure what happened, but it was not pretty. It is definitely worth trying, though!

I am wondering if she has seen an allergist? They might be able to get her a nutritional supplement...she could look into this one as well, I believe it is just sprouted brown rice....

I really feel for her, so, so tough!!!

This is a hard one! I see she can't have eggs, but does that mean she can't have baked goods containing eggs? Also, is it just milk or is it any dairy? I have a friend who is allergic to milk but can eat cheese without any problems.

So, if she can do cheese:

*smoked salmon with cream cheese on a millet bagel (as Jenn said)
*sauted mushrooms and onions on a millet bagel topped with cheese
*smoked salmon and avocado with a fresh beet-apple salad?
*hash browns with ham and veggies that she can have (onions, peppers, asparagus, etc.)
*zucchini boats (stuff with breakfast sausage and blue cheese for a change of pace)

I will keep thinking. It's like a puzzle. I know there are answers! We will find them!

She can't even have eggs or dairy in any form. She substitutes applesauce in baked goods for eggs, and in meatloafs and such.
