Where do you store your dish drying rack? I hate having one out, but under the sink is the only place for my garbage can - and I just think that would be gross to store the drying rack. Was thinking of finding a folding one and putting a hook on inside of pantry door to store it.

I hate HATE hate the dish drying rack. Seems like there is no convenient place to put it. It's either in the way or too far out of the way to use. I've thought about getting this dish drainer from Ikea which hangs on this rail. At least it would be off of the counter.

Mine is on my counter, holding dishes and knives that get washed throughout the day. I can't set aside specific times to work on dishwashing, so that's how it goes.
What I would love, truly, is an Italian cupboard arrangement. In Italian kitchens, the dish drying rack is a cupboard over the sink, so you can literally wash, dry and store everything in the same place. Super-handy!

They're more trouble than they're worth for us between the small size and the storage problem.. I just put down towels and set the dishes on those.. then the towels are easy to hang up eith on the hookds on the kitchen door, on the stove handle or on the clothes line.

I have two. Both fold, and I have them hanginging on hooks on the side of a tall cabinets (a wall would work, of course).

If I had to do it again, I'd do some kind of wall-mounted rack, and dream of the Italian cupboard-style thing Nancy describes.
When we haven't had a dishwasher, what's generally happened is that the dishes *live*, in rotation, in the rack on the counter. I hated that so much I can hardly bear to think about it, but that was reality. There was no question of storing the rack, because it was never not holding dishes.
At a church rummage sale once I bought a little rack that fits over one side of the sink -- someday, when we're down to two or three people in the house, I'd like to use something like that for daily dishes, especially breakfast and lunch.
Our last dishwasher used to break every several months, but I found that that wasn't as bad as not having a dishwasher at all, because it did make a very nice out of the way drying rack . . .

Well, we wash everything by hand here and go through tons of dishes it seems! My dish drying rack sits on the counter and I agree with everyone that I hate it. I really don't have a place to store it though, and like Nancy, it usually has dishes in it. I've also been known to use towels like Jodie and I agree it's really quite easy to dry them over the oven door or wherever there is a hook. The problem I've run into with that is that the dishes stay more wet.
In my ideal kitchen, because I really don't mind doing dishes by hand (I know, I'm weird!), I would like a sink like thiswith the drainboard built right in. You can see it's very expensive though! Way outside of my sink budget!
And really, for the amount of dishes we have, I would probably still need the other drain board. Maybe a sink with a third basin to set the drainer into?

I have dreams of a kitchen sink with drainboards like this! My G-ma had a kitchen sink with a single drainboard ~ dishes drying there always looked homey and natural. Love the Italian idea and see that Finns do something similar. Our current set-up, with a window over the sink wouldn't make a drying cupboard possible. Oh well, back to dreaming!

Love that sink, Servant2theKing! I wish I had a big country kitchen to put it in! It just seems so practical to me. One of my issues is the way water pools around the sides and back of my sink, especially after the kids do the dishes. They aren't so good yet at wiping things down when they are done doing dishes. Having the drain boards on either side, plus the higher back would help all that water to run right back into the sink.

Becky, that's exactly why I wish we could install a sink like that! We have the same issue of flooding around the sink whenever mother's helpers do dishes ~ which is most of the time. One solution I've come up with is building a dam ~ a towel behind the faucet and one on each side of the sink ~ not pretty, but it helps cut down on the stagnant pools of water dampening my spirits! The cost of having "exuberant volunteers" in the kitchen (read, guys who want to get the job done fast, and sometimes furious)!
Barb, our dish drainer, has taken up permanent residence on our kitchen counter, ever since the demise of our dw. One thing that helps me reconcile myself to its constant presence is being grateful for the blessing of all the meals those mounds of dishes, pots and pans represent! I'm certainly not able to have an attitude of gratitude all the time ~ I still yearn for a lovely solution ~ but I find the "elephant on the kitchen counter" is less intrusive when I do focus on the many blessings it represents! Our cup/dishdrainer certainly overfloweth!

I have one of these: http://www.target.com/p/oxo-silicone-drying-mat-grey-large/- /A-13291919#prodSlot=medium_1_4&term=dish+drying
Works good for the big things I don't want to put into the dish washer (i.e. - blender)
