Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to follow a sugar control diet to somewhat rectify my off-kilter metabolism.

The only nuts allowed are raw cashews and Brazil nuts.

Well, I've struck out on both of them. Cashews gave me eczema. And I finally figured out that I'm either allergic to Brazil Nuts or have a toxic amount of selenium.

I didn't realize I needed to just eat 4 at a time (a day probably). I was trying to reduce my dairy intake, so a quick protein snack daily....I haven't been able to figure it out until I looked it up yesterday.

I'm just saying, Google Brazil nuts and watch your intake.

But how to figure if this is allergy or just too much? I wasn't pigging out, but I was consuming pretty much daily, probably 8 or so. I think I was having stomach issues pretty much at the beginning, but wasn't putting it together that it was the nuts.

Anyone else have this problem? I could never be a vegan because the nuts and berries and beans approach will not work for me!

I know brazil nuts are high in selenium but I hadn't heard it could be a problem to eat too many.

Can eczema be an allergic reaction? My understanding is tree nuts are similiar enough that an allergy to one may mean an allergy to the others.. not always.. but the allergy warning and such seem to be either peanut or tree nuts.. not specifics like almonda or cashews or whatever.

Interesting that you're not allowed peanuts since I've always heard that they help stabilize blood sugars.

There were numerous articles I read, but these three stood out for me:

Side Effects of Brazil Nuts

Everyday Foods Can make You Sick

Ten Tree Nuts You Can Be Allergic To.

And the diet I'm trying to follow is
this sugar control diet. The explanations on the reasons why not peanuts and such are in the book The Sugar Control Bible and Cookbook: The Complete Nutrition Guide to Revitalizing Your Health, but I don't have it right now.

I never really thought about it, but I do know of people who eat Brazil nuts daily because they need the selenium but limit it to 1-2 a day even as a supplement, so it makes sense.

I do find that the traditional foods approach of soaking nuts (and legumes) help with digestive issues, but I found getting the nuts dry enough to be crunchy again was a bit of a pain without a dehydrator, so I just eat fewer nuts. I'm not sure I could handle either as a significant daily part of my diet. If it is well prepared, though, I can do a couple of times a week. My "symptoms" would only ever have been digestive, though. Eczema, to me, means allergy or sensitivity. I imagine that if you are healing your gut, which controlling your sugar could help (I'd also add in a high grade probiotic while you are at it), it might be easier to digest these foods again down the road.

The funny thing is I wasn't really having problems with my gut until I started eating these....so answer is obvious just avoid the nuts.
