Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Not sure where to put this, but thought I would start here.

My sons are interested in sewing, so I'm going to work further with them. I'm working on each having a mechanical machine to use, instead of my very expensive one.

I found an old Riccar through Craigslist, and I have another family Singer that needs a little TLC because the bobbin really snarls. A local lady is giving me an old one that she removed from the cabinet...I don't know the state.

I'm hoping one day to get a Singer Treadle and a Singer Featherweight, but I'll work up to that.

But this rabbit trail has led me to think this would be a good basic mechanics to learn the insides of a sewing machine (mechanical), how it works, and perhaps work on some old ones.

It would be the blind leading the blind. If anyone has done this, did you have books to guide you? I am sure I'm not the first one to have this idea and I hate to reinvent the wheel!

No idea, Jenn, but I would probably ask my sewing machine repairman for some guidance. They offer a lot of classes and such as well as repairing machines and are always open to answering questions.

The classes I've looked around cost hundreds of dollars. We did have an informal lesson when I dropped my Riccar off at my local shop (this is where I bought my other machine). The husband fixes the machines, and he gave a little explanation on how the machine works with the interlocking stitch, compared to the chain stitch which was the original sewing machine stitch.

I plan to ask him more. ;-) And my library had an old book of basics, and there are tons online.

I just want them to be able to tinker and figure some of this on their own, too.

Right. I didn't mean that you would take a class as much as that they are often teachers and might be able to suggest a good book. It seems like one of those things where someone in the trade would know where to start, specifically if you have particular machines in mind or in recommending the best for that purpose, etc...

I taught my boys how to use the sewing machine to sew on their merit badges, so I had to give a few basics. I should have turned it into a real lesson!

There's this:

or an older one:

How about your sewing machine manual? Would that be a good place to start?

And here's a short but neat video on how the sewing machine bobbin works.
