use an apron?

I absolutely do see the usefulness of an apron and think it makes sense to wear one. I don't have one, though. I once told my grandmother that I didn't use an apron and she gave me one. I keep it as a keepsake but not as an apron. My mom made matching aprons for my daughter and me but we've only used them for painting projects and such.

That is NOT to say that I never get splashes and splotches from working in the house. I *should* use an apron. I would like to use an apron. It makes sense to use an apron.

So why don't I? I think it's because I find the full apron too hot and uncomfortable and the half-apron doesn't really protect my clothing from much.

And I'd need one with matching sleeve protectors and that would really be to hot!

I don't use aprons, either. They would definitely be too hot for me!

Also, I'm pretty careful when I cook. I'm more in need of an apron when I eat!

My husband uses an apron when he grills, though...

I leave mine on sometime for that reason!

I don't use one, but really should, I've ruined many a cute t-shirt due to splatters from grease.

Need to think on this.

Dawn takes out the grease, the blue original Dawn. Apply it right to the grease spots and rub it with a toothbrush.

I would love to wear an apron but I find them very uncomfortable. I also don't like ones that tie behind my neck.

I don't wear one, either. Too much trouble.

And, not surprisingly, I am very glad to have that Dawn information. Too much trouble to wear an apron; not too much trouble to scrub grease spots with Dawn and a toothbrush. Go figure.

These days I am pretty sure that apron wearers are the ones in the minority, not non-wearers. It only seems to be the norm here since I'm bumping all the threads - which pretty much consist of only a few of us having the conversation. For me there is something nostalgic about it as well as practical. I love the look, I love the symbolism of hospitality.

I find I really like aprons in winter (another layer) as I am usually cold anyway. In summer they CAN be warm. Heavy twill which a lot of chef aprons are made of is toasty. Especially for summer really lightweight fabric aprons - like voile or lawn - would be a good option. They aren't so tough and hardy - but still serve the function of protecting the clothing beneath.

And we have been discussing the "uncomfortable" factor in the other thread. Ones that don't go around the back of the neck are so much nicer for comfort. Ones that tie at neck are the worst - I won't wear those at all. The neck ones I do have loop over - no tie.   So look for styles that don't go around neck - harder to find as what is sold everywhere in general commercial locations are variations on chef with the neck support to hold them up.

I don't use an apron, either.

I'm a master at getting stains out of clothing, though.      I knew the trick about Dawn. I need it a lot this time of year when the local ice cream shops open for the year. My kids seem to forget how to eat ice cream from a cone during the winter, and their clothes get horrible grease marks from the ice cream every spring.

I'm really lazy and messy, so that's why I wear aprons. I don't like to change clothes, I find it easier to throw on the apron. Sunday was an example of eating before Mass but I was dressed for Mass, so on with the apron.

It is clear that neck strap aprons are not known for comfort - here is a pattern which even includes that fact in it's name - No-neck stress apron which crosses in the back

I'm only a recent 'convert' to aprons. I got tired of having to wash grease marks out of my clothing and ahem I should (and sometimes do) wear one at the table too

I don't wear an apron either.

Very occasionally I do, but I find they get in the way.

I really want to start wearing aprons, but I don't sew and the ones I like, like Mary linked to above are not available in the stores, at least not that I have seen. Anyone want to make one for me?    Just kidding.

I should wear an apron I always have a flour line across my middle on the days I make bread. My mom wears an apron, so I tend to remember to wear one when she is around- it always makes me happy and domestic feeling!

This! Couldn't have said it better!

I don't always wear an apron...but when I do it's for practical reasons and...just because it "makes me happy and domestic feeling!" And my boys especially just LOVE it when Mom wears an apron! They even like to pick out the one I wear!

I don't really like the straps around the neck either, so my full aprons tend to have the straps which criss-cross the back rather than tie around the neck. But my preference is for half aprons that tie around the waist. I'm probably the only person here with that preference. It certainly isn't the most practical way to wear an apron, but if you're trying to break into apron wearing ( ) then a half apron might be the way to start! I like them because it's really like wearing a towel around my waist...I grab it to wipe up spills, wipe my hands, to go out to the kitchen gardens (I use it to contain herb cuttings, tomatoes freshly cut, etc. - you know...you grab both corners and hold them up making a kind of trough with your apron), contain lip gloss in the pocket (an essential for any apron wearing diva!!!), etc. I usually only wear a full apron if I need a body-bib (because I'm eating a meal in a church dress).

I use half aprons often, especially while pregnant and nursing. It is a pain to have to nurse a baby on the fly and wrestle with getting an apron off to boot. They are much more practical as a quick grab and a lot less fiddly. Sometimes I feel fiddly, but my apron choice varies greatly by mood. Sometimes I even wear my twill, chef's style apron as a half apron with the top folded down and behind the bottom.

I don't always use aprons, but there have been plenty of times I've groaned and wondered why on earth I didn't.

I usually don't because I am often still in my pjs or 'working' clothes (old clothes that I like to clean in but couldn't walk outside in, well not the front yard anyway!). I am more likely to come home from something that I had to be dressed for and change back into these clothes to cook or clean! This is not an exaggeration at all - ask my teen girls. :)

I do have an old one of my grandma's that I wear if I wear one at all. It is definitely a working one and not all that pretty but it was hers. It was totally falling apart and my oldest mended it for me. I hope it lasts forever.....

I wear skirts/dresses full time, so wearing an apron doesn't change "shape" as much as when I used to wear pants - at that time, wearing an apron actually didn't feel right. Now it does ;)
Just a thought on why some ladies might not like the changed feeling when wearing one.

Behind the neck - nope. Hate them.

My favorite is not even mine - it has arm hole you slip into, then the tie goes around your waist and ties in the front. I LOVE it.

HEAT: light-weight cotton (or the other suggestions above) for the summer time and even sometimes in the winter.

You can certainly get 3/4 sleeves. I wouldn't go longer than that because of the draping issue. That favorite I mentioned above? It doesn't have sleeves-sleeves, but it does have a flap of fabric that kind of hangs/wraps around each arm. I AM NOT describing that right. I'll see if I can find a photo of the concept.
