I think I asked this before, but I need to flesh out my question.

If you only could have ONE Le Creuset, how do you pick the size?

I want to use it for these uses:

Cook a Whole Chicken (3-4 lbs) in the oven
Oven Roast Beef or Pot Roast
Stews and soups on the stove (at least 5 quarts, usually).

I can't decide between the round and oval, and then if 5 1/2 vs. 7 1/4 quart round or 6 3/4 oval.

I think the round would be best, just for even cooking and versatility, but I'm worried about the chicken fitting.

Any feedback would be helpful!

Jenn, I have a round 28cm pot. (maybe 11 inches) I honestly don't know how many quarts it is, but it is large enough for a whole 4lb chicken and for any size roast that our family plus guests need. I wouldn't want bigger, because there are times when I only roast 3 lbs of meat or just enough stew for one meal for our family alone. In that case a bigger pot would be too big and I would have to use something else. It is just the right size for our oven.(german ovens are small) The round form is perfect for our stovetop, especially when cooking with several pots at once.
I'm sorry I can't tell you which quart size my pot is, but perhaps the diameter measurements is enough to know.

Stephnie,

That is so helpful! That is exactly the size I was thinking -- it seems to be the 7 1/4 quart.

Thank you. I cannot tell you how long I've been agonizing over this.

Jenn,
I also have the round 28. Love it! I agonized over the size when i got mine 2 years ago. I always thought that I would want the larger size, but I am REALLY happy with this size I have. I use it for everything!

Now, the really agonizing decision is the color. I went with the origional Flame Orange color.

If I get a choice, Orange is one of my least favorite colors, so I'm leaning towards the traditional red Cherry, Indigo blue, or the ink or Marseilles colors.

I, too, have the 7 1/4 qt. round...it's my go-to pot. Definitely big enough for roasting a whole chicken - I've done it many times. I think I had one that was a little over 4 lbs. one time, and it did fine. Also, does a fantastic job with stews!! I made Julia's Beouf Bourguignon the other day - from browning to the end all in this one pot.

I prefer the round to the oval because it's more versatile for my cooktop (round is necessary for my flat surface cooktop, but it just *seems* like a better fit in general for any cooktop...because all eyes are round). I use mine about half and half - split between cooktop cooking/simmering and roasting in the oven.

I have red Cherry. I do like it, but mine has more orange in it than true deep red, which would have been my pref. Just mentioning that since I know orange isn't your fav color, Jenn.

I have a 7.25-qt round too!!! No problem fitting in a 3-4 lb. chicken. I've had it since 2004. The only thing I don't like is that after 8 years, the enamel is now quite worn down. I'm thinking of getting the under $100 pot, made in France, that Costco offers.
