Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am going to start a small garden. Anyway - there is a fire ant hill in the raised bed I will plant in so I don't want to use chemicals. Anyone know if any of the abounding home remedies actually work?

We have a big problem with fire ants here...and they love to invade my garden. We do the Texas Two Step for organic control of them.

Pouring boiling water on the mound will also kill the ants... but it won't really control the problem for too long. Plus, if you have billions and billions of ants like we have, it's sort of unwieldy. But my dh is going to try using it in our asparagus bed because he's not sure he really wants to use anything over top the asparagus.

Here's what I'm trying:

Texas 2 step (see Jen's link) in the grass part of my yard. Just the "orange Guard" spray on mounds in where my garden will go.

A friend told me that diatomaceous earth works. I think you need to make sure you have "food grade" or "horticulture grade". DON"T get the kind made for swimming pools as that is toxic.
