Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Alice's post today about paper quilling brought back fond memories of watching my mother create this lovely art when I was a girl. My mother was always crafting in some way and very often allowed my brother and me to participate. So when I read Alice's post, as usual I was overcome with awe and inspiration, but also sweet nostalgia. Alice, as the daughter of a crafty, loving mama, let me just say, what beautiful memories you are making for your children!!

Anyway, I happened to notice an article in Home Education Magazine today ~ of all days! ~ on what else but Early American Paper Quilling! I thought this was an interesting quote:

Lucy Steele, one of the characters in Jane Austen's 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility, even uses quilwork to show her good breeding when bullied into making a present for the hostess's little girl:

"Lucy directly drew her work table near her and reseated herself with an alacrity and cheerfulness which seemed to infer that she could taste no greater delight than in making a filigree basket for a spoilt child."

And as Jenn mentions in a recent post, paper quilling is a forgotten art ... I love how this craft ties in history and art, and Alice brings in the beauty of our Faith ... thank you ladies!

I, too, have fond memories of watching my mother quill. She has picked it up again recently and has made me a few that I'll have to take pictures of and share.

We bought the Klutz quilling book. I really like the brightly colored paper! My ds (6) got a little frustrated with it, but my dd (8) loved it. We made sea creatures when we did our ocean unit. I've been thinking about pulling it out again. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for sharing this, I was so inspired by Alice's post. Do you know what exactly is a quilling tool that Alice recommends? Wouldn't you know it, nobody in this town sells quilling tools I should expect this now. So I've sourced some on ebay but not too sure I'm looking at the correct tool.

I was thinking I could use ordinary coloured paper as I'm not too fussed about the acid free part. Do you think that would work?

Thanks for bringing up paper quilling I'm keen to try another 'trail'

I'm not sure Erin; I saw quite a selection of paper quilling supplies at AC Moore on Saturday, and I was very tempted to buy the kit, but I had left my coupon home, so maybe next week.

I would think it would, but I'm not sure. I haven't done paper quilling since I was a little girl!
Maybe if Alice sees this, she can help with some better advice.

Erin, I just realized you live in Australia! So you probably don't have a neighborhood AC Moore to pop over to! If you have a hard time getting the supplies, let me know. I would be happy to pick up what you need and ship it over to you.
