Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We bought a used piano yesterday. When I went to see it, I didn't notice an odor, but we got it home yesterday and it STINKS. The woman has three cats and two dogs in a very small home so I am thinking this is pet odor. I have vacuumed out the back that had a lot of cat hair and polished it. What else can I do for this odor? Will it just air out and be ok?

Dh (the piano tech) suggests looking at Febreeze to see if it is ok for wood.

Did you take the bottom board off? It could be coming from there. Look up 'bottom board' online to see what he's talking about.

My suggestion is to call a vet and ask them for a product recommendation, but be careful because certain piano woods are warpable (dh, again).

I used a bunch of baking soda to get pet odor out of wood floors. Not sure how you'd get that safely into (and out of) a piano, though.

is there a safe (for the piano) way to blow more dust out of it? a vacuum is nice for keeping the surrounding area clean but it doesn't clean near as well as something that has a stream of air.

It seems like you'll need to put some things that can absorb odor -- like activated charcoal or kitty litter (non clumping kind) and even newspapers crumpled up inside. It's going to take a while. At least it's not smoke -- I don't think that is ever fixed.

Can you just send him over here? Where do you live?

Awww…. I wish he could help you in person. We may have to evacuate (because of this) but hopefully we won't have to go quite so far…..

Another thought came to me. You might want to try calling some antique or restoration stores and talk with them. They might have some products that they can recommend. Those folks are great at bring back furniture. Then take their suggestions and call a piano dealer to verify.

We use Steven Cunningham Piano Services (also bought our piano through them). Very pleased...and they might be able to point you in the right direction...or even make it out where you are.
