I recently moved and in my new house the previous owner left a phrase on one wall that says: Every Picture Tells a Story (or something like that).Sooooo, like her I want to display photos around it. Now this IS a big wall, problem is - I just ordered prints of what I would like to include and I just counted - I have about 95 pictures! OK - obviously some have to be weeded out. But how on earth do I start planning the wall? do I go out and buy various frames (I want black frames some 3x5 and 4x6) - some single, some collage frames and then figure out how they may work on the wall?

Anyone try to do a wall display of lots of family photos? How did you go about it!?

I do. Down my hallway.

I would start by laying out the pictures.. or maybe use bit of masking tape rolled up so you can stick the pictures to the wall temporarily. And just start arranging the photos.. group ones you might like together in a collage frame. space the others out.

I generally like starting with a central grouping and then just add others around that in a pleasing but not necessarily completly balanced form.

Jodie, Thanks! I have a natural center of the saying on the wall. I honestly thought I would go to hooby lobby of Micheals and get a variety of frames - single and collage - then place the ones I absolutely "must" have first and go from there.

I am getting kind of nervous! But - will get this tackled soon! My excuse for not going this week end is it is "tax free" back to school shopping here in Texas and the parking lots of most places are already packed!

I would do frames in a matching finish -- all black, or whatever -- to make your grouping look like a collection and not just a random bunch of pictures.

I've also seen articles which recommend laying out your collection of framed pictures on the floor, to work out a layout which is pleasing to you -- maybe even laying them out on a big sheet of paper and tracing around them, so you have a template for your layout.

I have black-and-white family photos on the wall along my staircase. It's a little wonky right now, because I plan to add more in the future, but wanted to put the ones I had up right away (and did NOT do a layout on the floor with a template!). Still, I like having them where we all see them all the time, and although they're in different frames, the fact that they're all black-and-white unifies them. I've even redone color photos in black-and-white so that I could put them on that wall and not wreck the theme!

And if you have it all centered and work out from that center, you may be able to add other batches of framed pictures later, if you have room on the "outside" of your design.
