So, my vacuum cleaner died--the good one. We had two that were the same except that my husband had rebuilt one and used parts from a third one, but it literally hurts my ears, the sound is so awful.
I don't have a lot of time, but I wanted to toss this out for recommendations and thoughts just in case.
We have mostly hard wood with a couple of area rugs in the living and family rooms. I do like using a vacuum on the hardwood--any advice? I'm not thinking that I need something like a Dyson since I don't have a lot of carpet, but most vacuums are popular and rated for how they work on wall-to-wall.
We've had three Optima vacuums, which have actually been good. They were an especially good vacuum for our old home, which was very small with no closets. The hand pushes down for compact storage and it works well for little boys. Pretty sure that the first one died because it was dropped down the stairs, not because it wore out. You can imagine the abuse they have gotten. With our new home being bigger, I'm thinking I need more, though, even without carpet.
Any thoughts about something like a shark vac? When I was vacuuming the rather flat woven rug in the family room, when the vacuum died, it was NOISY like little pebbles and hunks of dry mud were the culprits This isn't likely to change.
I wish there was a more elegant shop vac I could use for my regular vacuuming

So, after making that joke about a shop vac, I thought, huh? I wonder if anyone uses a shop vac in place of a regular household vac.
My husband is into woodworking in a big way, and he LOVES his Festool tools and shop vac. It is much sleeker and quieter (and spendier) than a regular shop vac.
So, I did some googling, and it turns out that Festool actually makes a set of attachments that would work.
I just got off the phone with him, and he is SO EXCITED about our using the Festool for our home vac. He's on his way to Woodcraft! Not sure how it will work out, but I'm willing to try it, if only because it has gotten my husband excited about replacing the vacuum instead of eyes glazed over as I fret over options. They have a 30 day guarantee on Festool products, so we'll be able to return it if we don't like it.

Yes, there are people who use a shop vac in place of a regular household vac. Years ago there were a bunch of them posting at Gardenweb extolling the virtues of using/buying a shop vac instead of a Dyson or a Miele.

Oh neat! It is so great feeling affirmed!
It is interesting that the salesman who helped dh this evening said that approximately 5% of the sales for this particular shop vac is for home use. His wife has a different German made shop vac, a Fein, that they bought before Festool came out with their smaller model. His wife asked him what he was unloading, and when he told her the cost, she said something about how many vacuums she could buy for the cost, but then when he showed her how quiet and strong it was, she wanted one. I'm not sure that it is her only vacuum, but it made me feel less nutty.
I think it will be a good fit for us. And, while it doesn't look as elegant as a Miele (though, it is spiffy for a shop vac), for the price of a low end Miele, you get a lot of power, and I feel like I can use it for more rugged tasks. I'm excited. I probably won't get any Martha Stewart points, but Martha Stewart didn't have four boys either

I love my Miele, but I used a reg. Shop Vac in my little apartment for years, and I loved it! I think if I had known there were quieter ones, I would have considered it for all our tile here. Hope you are happy with yours.
