Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just lost my post.

Dh is giving me a lovely new sewing machine for Christmas! We were all together at our local needlecraft store to choose the model (a different subject, but she's retiring after 22 years and the store might close forever!). She carries gorgeous quilting fabrics, and my son wanted to make something. We decided to make a pillow for his grandmother.

He has been attending atrium for years, and the catechist focuses on learning wonderful skills -- he has learned basic calligraphy and hand sewing and some sewing machine work. It's very introductory, but we have reaped so much from this blessing.

Anyway, it only took us an hour to whip up a pillow, and it uses only basic skills. Pillow forms are on sale at Hancock Fabrics right now, too. I ended up buying some NFL fabric for him to make some more pillows as gifts.

Corded Pillow, but we skipped the piping step completely.

Skills involved: cutting, sewing a straight line, hemming/finishing two edges by machine, ironing, finishing interior edges with zigzag or other stitch to keep from ravelling, pivoting corners.

No fasteners required. When you finish sewing and ironing, the pillow form pops in and you're done. Very satisfying for a child!

Envelope Pillow. We didn't use this one because our fabric had patterns that needed to be turned around.

This football pillow will probably be next with the new machine...more skills.
