I'm in desperate need of figuring out how to organize our shoes and boots. I'm running out of room to store things. Right now, all boots and shoes are in rubbermaid containers, except for the ones that are in a big black garbage bag. They are in decent condition, otherwise I don't keep them. When I tell my dh that I have no room to store things, he just says to not complain if I'm going to keep them all. I asked if I'm supposed give them all away once the season is out, he says, no, just don't complain b/c there's no room.
I'm going to go really batty really soon. We have no garage nor shed to store things outside. The spare room is storing camping stuff, that have only been used once, extra blankets, jars and quickly running out of space.
Should I just get rid of the extra footwear? We need winter boots, rubber boots, sandals, running shoes, and dress shoes multiplied by 7 children.
Winter clothing as well. 7 sets of winter clothing, plus the storage of items not being used presently, takes a LOT of room, when there are so many other things being stored as well.
Have you found what works for you? Would love to hear some input!

Well, I'll tell you what we've been doing with shoes. I wouldn't say it always works. We have a small entry to our house only about 3x4 of linoleum before you hit the carpet of our living room. In a perfect world the kids would take their shoes off there whenever they come in. We have an end table right to the right of the door. Everyone stashes their everyday shoes under there. Out of season shoes,dress shoes etc. get hung up in something like this. There is one in each closet and hanging off the back of each bedroom door too.
Stuff that we have in waiting to be passed down is all stuffed into a boxes in the basement. Some of the soon to be needed sizes line the basement steps. So I don't have to shuffel through a lot of boxes when I need the next size shoe.

out of season and not used sizes are in totes in the garage.. I have a large open box under my desk at the end of the kitchen (closest I could get to the backdoor) for snowboots in use. The girls have a shoe hanger on their bedroom door (the outside of it. the inside has hooks for other things  ) for their nice shoes.. and whatever other shoes end up on the floor in the closets.
I did consider hanging the shoe holders (like for over the door) on the back wall of the closet.. but thought there'd be too much fighting with clothes to get to it. It might work for storing some shoes though.. especially dress shoes which typically can be passed down since they don't get too much wear.

you might also want to consider what you have available to you in the way of second hand and other cheap options for shoes.. I have very little in the way of second hand anything available here so I store a lot. But I know people who have access to great secondhand stores who don't store anything because it's so cheap to get more.
But if you only store things that have a prohibitive replacement cost, that should cut down on how much you're storing too.
