Hi everyone, I could use some help. I pulled my crock pot out of its base yesterday, and it was fuzzy with mold on the bottom! It looks like the bottom had a hairline crack, and somehow, the glazing then crazed and crackled all over. Aaargh... this is the second pot in a year.

So, is it the porcelain sink in our rental (our old sink was aluminum), or are these pots more fragile than they used to be?

I hate to buy another one right now, but the school year is coming up, and we get so busy. And we won't talk about what happened to the roast I put on the back burner because I couldn't use the Crock-Pot... uugh.


Any suggestions??? Thanks!

I have heard that they're more fragile..

I LOVE my electric roaster (I had a nesco and my current on is a proctor silex). It can be used very simliarly to a crockpot.. and the insert is enamel over steel.. so sturdier in that respect.. but you can also roast and bake in it as well. I have the one big enough for a thanksgiving turkey. But they do make smaller ones.

I think if there is a crack and the insert is put away wet, the mold will find a way to get started. (I have had this happen with unglazed pottery, too.) I doubt it is your sink.

If you are part of a local Freecycle group, you might want to ask if anyone is giving away a crockpot. Many people have them and never, ever use them. (I can't think why!)

LOL, Jodie. My planning is usually far from perfect.

My first pot lasted 20 years, and now... two in a year... I do think maybe they are more fragile. I'm glad it might not be the sink.

I'm mulling over the suggestion for a roaster, instead. Hmmm. Is there anything that won't work in one? I've used the crock-pot for stews and applesauces and roasts, mostly. Will the roaster work for those?

yep.. I've done roasts and bean soups and baked enchiladas and apple pie filling.

The settings are like an oven.. mine goes from 200* to 450*.

I might be taking a little detour here, but I have always wanted to know:

Is there something a crock pot or roaster can do that a dutch oven cannot do?

or the other way around:

Can a dutch oven do everything a crock pot can?

You can leave the house with a crockpot turned on. I am not, personally, comfortable with leaving my stove or oven on while I'm away. (Now, if I had an Aga... ) But, yes, a dutch oven is very, very versatile.

A good cast iron dutch oven can go camping with you! A crock pot cannot do that...lol. Or, if the power is out for an extended period, and you have a fireplace, you can use it in there, buried in coals, to make a nice meal....

I agree, Rachel. I do have a cast iron dutch oven that we use for camping. It's great. However, we have a glasstop stove in this rental house, and I'm always paranoid about *someone* sliding the cast iron over the cooktop and scratching it.      Glasstop is such high maintenance. Uuugh.   

I think I will need to purchase something else for the school year. Dinner is always a struggle with our schedules. Dh is never home at a predictable time, and I like for him to have a warm meal.

Jodie, are the roasters really heavy? I'm also wondering where I could store something like that when I'm not using it.

Does anyone know if any of the other brands of slow cookers hold up better?

Thanks for helping me with my school year cooking dilemma!!!
