make homemade, or no cookies at all?
My Grama always had her cookie jar full and I spent a great part of my growing up at her house. As I was making my summer list, I thought to add "keep the cookie jar full." I didn't have a weight problem, my kids don't and I was wondering if cookies in the cookie jar are a thing of the past. If you don't have cookies, what kind of snacks do you have available?

We do cookies off and on. I prefer to make them, now my older ones are old enough to make them too, so that's awesome!      But we do occasionally buy them. We don't have weight issues either so if we did, we'd likely not.

Snacks though at our house are on a budget so they are usually:
leftovers
popcorn (air-popped)
carrot sticks
celery sticks
half a piece of fruit
cookies
snack cake (homemade)
almonds

That is nearly our snack list as well. We don't have AC so we do little baking in the summer. In the winter, I often have the cookie jar full. Though it's not a charming cookie jar... it's a big tupperware storage container.

We don't really do cookies except as a treat every once in a while. Weight isn't the only health concern. That much sugar can take a toll on the immune system as well as filling one with empty calories versus nourishing ones. Cookies are a dessert here, not a snack.

Because we do cookies rarely, we buy them on occasion as well, and we'll buy the expensive fancy varieties because it is a "treat." However, if I were to keep baked goods in the house, I think I'd make them so I could better control the ingredients.

We have fruit on hand for a morning snack and usually do smoothies for an afternoon snack in the summer. Often it will be peanutbutter toast or peanutbutter on apples in the winter (smoothies are cold!). Sometimes yogurt or cheese. I try to have some sort of protein with the afternoon snack because I feel it gets them through to dinner better.

Anyway, not being critical at all, just sharing. I do think that cookie jars are going out of fashion because people realize there are health implications beyond weight concerns. Also, people simply aren't home as much and do their munching on the go

I do bake regularly to keep cookies and snacks in the house. I will sometime buy them but, I find after years of homemade they all have a funny taste and aftertaste.

I use whole wheat flour or a whole wheat blend and don't use white sugar in most of the cookies. I find they don't get the sugar spikes as much from this.

yes I buy them because I'm not up to making homemade oreos

But they're not an all the time thing here either..

And we make homemade as much or more than buying.

But then there's very little that is an all the time thing here..

During warmer months I like to buy Graham crackers or animal crackers at Costco. During the cold months we always bake our own cookies, scones, muffins and cakes. For regular snacking we always keep:

- a fruit basket,
- granola,
- carrots, cucumbers
- nuts (usually peanuts),
- pretzels,
- yogurt,
- cheese,
- and some sort of dry craker (ritz, but usually a whole wheat brand)

We rarely, rarely buy them and then they are consumed in one sitting.

Now I want cookies.

We bake our own, unless DH does the shopping, lol. My oldest is a great hand at chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, and the ever-wanted jam thumbprint cookies. :-) Although I did make some nice chewy molasses cookies.

We don't have weight issues amongst the younger members of the family, but DH and I do...so I abstain from them, and go have a nice piece of steak (I'm doing Atkins at the moment, which works well with my PCOS).

I just bought some from Trader Joe's this morning, but they were shared with another family and were definitely eaten up before the visit was over. :) My kids bake a lot of cookies, though.

I actually have a cookie jar that I made years ago at one of those ceramics places. I don't know why I cherish it so much, maybe because I am so not crafty. One of my kiddos broke the lid (which dh glued back together) so now it's mostly off-limits to the younger set.....which is kind of sad. Hmmmmm.....

I have very fond memories of sneaking into our pantry for cookies from one of those Tupperware cookie 'jars' like Bridget mentioned. :)

That's one reason why sending DH to the store is more trouble than it is worth. Too much junk food!    I prefer making my own. I buy them occasionally to make my husband happy and I get Oreos, because he likes them and I don't. That way I won't eat them, as I certainly don't need them! We made homemade chocolate chip cookies the other day. It's an activity my kids love.

Your list looks exactly like our standard snack list. My children eat a lot of fruit.

Also, right now veggies from the garden (radishes, fresh pea pods, green beans)

~~Frozen Gogurts are a hit.

After watching them make a meal out of snacks (consuming everything at once) and continually tell me that they "are hungry" ......today, we made Peanut Butter Power Bites. Healthy snacks, they are not, but my children were satisfied after eating two! The remaining 40+ are in a tupperware container in the refrig. When I buy cookies, I can expect the entire bag to disappear within an hour after it's opened.

Yes, I buy IKEA cookies. These cookies are perfect for a cookie jar! They are also great to have on hand to fancy up a quick dessert. For example, I like to add their oatmeal cookie to a bowl of vanilla ice cream and chocolate or fruit sauce. I've turned their ginger cookies into little fruit pizzas. YUM!

Love,

I think that their iced sandwich cookie with the red jelly might be a near perfect store bought cookie.

Seriously! The cookies I buy aren't available on line but are super cheap in a biggish box and the ingredients are really clean .

Love,
