Is television part of your typical day? How much? When? What?
We have very few programs we allow our kids to watch (they are very young). All on dvd (so they never have television programs on) and I struggle with the how much is too much...or too little??
Thanks

For me it depends on what season of life we are living at the time. When I'm pregnant and the first few months with a newborn I let them watch TV fairly regularly. We only have free antenna TV, so during the day only PBS is available. I don't stress about it too much during those times when I can't get off the couch (horrible nausea during pregnancies). I love not having cable/satellite so that they aren't tempted by all the kid's stations.
Now that we are emerging from a babymoon, I limit TV to one show in the morning and then afternoons it might be on again if it's a rainy/cruddy day. For the most part, they are running around playing inside and out.
I keep saying I'm going to get rid of the TV, and for the most part it is off in the summertime, but I never follow through. I know it would be best to ditch it for good, but I'm too attached to it myself right now.

Actually, imho, there is no such thing as "too little" TV. While I do let my children watch TV, I definitely have a love/hate relationship with it. I'd prefer to ditch it altogether, but there are times when viewing a movie as a family can be relaxing.
I try to restrict the children to about 2 hrs each a week (there are three of them at home now during the day, so this works out to a little less than 1 hour per day, which includes Wii games). Even this is too much, I think. But in winter it does give me a break, and it can be a relief on very hot summer days, too.
In the nicer seasons of fall and spring, I try to keep the TV off as much as possible.

My kids can watch a thirty minute dvd or show on PBS every day after lunch.
(They are in a Martha Speaks phase ). That gives me a chance to clean up the kitchen and have my lunch in peace (I read to them while they eat).
That's it. Sometimes they don't watch anything all day. Sometimes in the summer when it's too hot to go outside, they watch an extra 30 minutes later in the day, but not often.
I find the more they watch, they less can entertain themselves
I would go tv-less, but dh wants to keep it.

I am actually really strict with the tv. I used to let the kids watch more, but I seemed to see a correlation between tv watching and bad behavior. We just have dvds for them to watch. During summer and Lent there is no tv watching. Exceptions being when one of the children is pretty sick, on a brutally hot summer day in the air conditioned guest room, or occasionally on a Sunday as a family. Outside of those times, they might average about 1 movie every 2 weeks. But this is just a guess, it is certainly no more than that. Oh, and I will use it a little during tough times of pregnancy and right after a baby is born.

TV is out part of most of our days, yes. We don't have cable. We use the HD antenna and then subscribe to the TIVO service. We can DVR PBS and all the local HD channels. Plus it feeds to Netflix & Youtube which is very cool. We get all that for $20 a month!
My 2 1/2 watches Curious George, Thomas the Train, Brother Francis DVD's, Hide 'Em in Your Heart dvd's, and a few by Hap Palmer. I love DVD's and PBS because NO COMMERCIALS!
But, if I think he's watching too much TV, I turn on pandora (either through the TV or my computer) and we listen to music from that.
I think if you use the TV at certain times every day, it's easier than having it on all of the time. He knows he can watch a video at night before he goes to bed, but not in the middle of the morning. used to bookend his naps with a DVD right after. That would give me a longer break if I needed it.

I have slackened a bit in this area lately - my two year old loves Playschool (an Australian show), so this goes on each day in the morning and afternoon, and usually the shows afterwards are watched for a little while as well (in the morning it is educational - today it was about China, in the afternoon it is cartoons that they enjoy). I am hoping to cut back to once a day again soon as I too notice their behaviour is sometimes worse after too much tv. And we watch a movie for family night each Saturday night. That sounds like we have the tv on all the time, but it isn't, and different children watch the different shows (10yo dd & 9yo ds listen to audio books with me during the morning show).

We hardly watch TV at all.
At the moment there is a show we are following. So thats an hr 4 days a week.
We used to watch the Tv every day and every night, now its hardly on.
In holidays its on for a family DVD, and thats it.
I used to not be able to do without the tv, now its music, talking, reading, maybe a game, discovering life away from the tv.
