This morning I woke up to a dead freezer and luckily the meat was still frozen! We have a wonderful neighbor who cleared off two shelves for us until we can get another freezer. My husband will most likely be purchasing one today and I don't have a lot of time to research which one/brand/kind/ etc... is best.

Any advice?

Thanks so much!

God bless you,

Jill

chest freezer is generally more efficient.. since cold sinks you lose less cold and in general it stays a bit colder.. but it's harder to get at anything.

an upright freezer maximizes your ability to get to different things but is harder to pack really full since you need to balance things on a shelf instead of packing it full like a box.

Also for longer term storage you will want a manual defrost. The frost-free has to warm up slightly periodically to be frost-free.. and while it's not a problem for shorter term frozen foods.. it can slowly degrade the quality if you have things stored for I think it's longer than 6 months.

Jodie summed up all the pros and cons perfectly!

With that being know, we have chosen to get an up right freezer. I like that I can organize my meat well and know what I have at all times. I use plastic buckets to separate the different cuts and help to fill up without haven't anything fall out.

When we looked that last time for ours I found that there really isn't many choices out there. I think they all are about the same quality and price is based on size.

Our Sears Outlet had some good deals when we were looking at refrigerators.

Also, you might consider your space where you want to put it. We like our chest freezer, and its a relatively small one, but spacewise, we might go with an upright down the road should we need to replace this one just because our garage is small, and the footprint of an upright is much less.

I have one of each. I prefer the upright by far!

Love my chest freezer--not much help! But I can pack SO much in there.

We have an upright, and are planning on buying chest freezers down the line. Mostly because of where we are going to be putting them (under some windows, and I don't want to block them unnecessarily).

As a child we had a chest freezer, I found alot of drawbacks. When dh and I bought a freezer I was adamant that we have an upright. I'm very happy we went this way. More for ease of stacking and withdrawing.

I am short, so I have an upright. If you are short, you just can't really reach to the bottom of a chest freezer, especially when you are pregnant!

I also found with a chest freezer, things got kind of "lost" at the bottom underneath everything else. I find I use what's in my freezer a little better if I can see it and remember what is in there. Probably that is a result of being vertically challenged, too!

Caroline that reminds me when I was a child.. or must have been 9 or 10 so VERY short.. and I would go to the chest freezer.. I could often be found tipped head down into the freezer with my legs hanging over the edge without touching the floors but I could usually get what was needed

one of the things that really draws me to the chest freezer is there's less chance of the door standing open.. either from not being closed completely or from having something push it open after it's been closed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, ladies, for your quick responses here! I wish I could say that we went out and bought a freezer today, ......but ......we didn't. . We had great intentions to do so and both of us separately went to "shop" and we both agree on which freezer we decided to buy which is a very good thing!!!

Okay, are you ready??? DRUMROLL please!

The upright wins! Here are the main reasons in order of their importance!

1. Husband definitely wants upright and I was very open minded to another one for I am used to it already!
2. I am visually challenged as well as organizationally challenged (I really have to work HARD at it!) and was afraid of not being able to "see" what was in there.
3. As Lindsay said, the footprint of the upright is smaller so it will fit better!

NOW for why we didn't get one tonight. My DH was fixing our sprinkler system and something went wrong! He had planned to fix the sprinkler system during the daylight hours and then go get the freezer, but, poor him, he ended up using some old glue and it didn't hold and water went everywhere and then the system shorted out the ground fault interupter in the garage which shorted out everything in our garage. Now he has to finish that because we have no water! I may be asking sprinkler questions tomorrow , but hopefully NOT!

THANK YOU all again for all your comments! I so appreciate them!

Praying you are having a peaceful and holy Lent,

Jill
