Hey Gals ! so I'm eye balling some treadle sewing machines here on that kijji website most are $30. -$100 . The ones that claim to be in good working order that is . I'm wondering what to look for in a machine ion regards to good working order . are there signs I should look for that indicate a poor machoine ?
My biggest question as well is , does brand name make a difference ? There is one looks just gorgeous brand name is Canadian White . I think they are asking $70 for that one . most come with accessories . are there certain accessories I should make sure do come with the machine ?
Oh I am kind of excited ! I can actually do this right now , where as the buying the wood cookstove I so want to do it but have to wait til the move to do so

Look for the treadle belt to be intact and the leather or rubber to be supple, not cracking or crumbly. The treadle should move freely and the sewing macine assembly should also move freely when you pump the treadle. I bought a treadle machine years ago that was unusable because of an old belt that wouldn't work the treadle properly. You may be able to find vendors who still carry belts for treadle machine. Lehmann's, who carry many non-electric supplies, comes to mind. Treadle machine belts are very long; they run from the bottom of the treadle wheel up to the wheel on the right of the sewing machine assembly. I never checked whether automotive or machine suppliers might also carry belts that would have worked...we ended up converting our old machine into a desk base. Good luck!

The treadle belt on my 1919 Singer is made of metal. It's coiled sort of like a spring (think the springs that make screen doors slam - WHAP!). I second the advice that having a decent treadle belt is crucial. Before you commit to buying a treadle machine, it might be a good idea to call places that service sewing machines and ask if they would be able to give it a good cleaning and oiling. The machine head is generally removable if it's in a cabinet, so you can take it in for service.

Maybe there is one that was recently serviced? Servicing can be quite expensive and that way you know that it is in working order. Singer parts are usually pretty easy to come by and lots of people do minor repairs themselves if they are handy. Sounds like fun.

Seconding what everyone else said, and adding in that I was able to find a leather treadle belt at a local sewing machine dealer. If they do repairs, they might have one hanging around, or can order one for you.

Have you sewn on a treadle before? I learned on one with my grandmother, and have many, many happy memories of sewing with her on her Singer.      

Nancy, your Singer sounds so interesting! I didn't know they went to a metal belt.

Juliana, I learned on my grandmother's treadle machine, too....we used to pump the treadle for her with our hands! The metal belt sounds so interesting to me, too! It's always fun to see how various things developed over time.
