Hi all-

Any advice on buying an additional freezer for food storage is appreciated. What size would you get (we are a family of 5, maybe growing someday)? Stand-up verses chest? Any brands to look for or avoid?

Thanks,

up right is generally easier to get things out of.. chest is usualluy easier to get more into

chest freezer stay colder when you open the door

manual defrost allows for longer storage.. frost free cycles slightly warmer to keep the frost down and it does impact the food for long term storage (more than 6 months I think)

you rarely need LESS space until the kids are grown and gone you can fill cleane milk or soda bottles with water and put then in the freezer to take up space and help the freezer maintain temps better and not cost as much to use (a full freezer takes less energy to maitain frozen foods than a partially full one.. so the ice will do that for you.)

I personally would really really LOVE the biggest chest freezer.. but I think if I didn't need as much space I'd go for an upright for the ease.

Chest freezers are supposed to be better at keeping the cold "in" since you open them from the top and the cold air sinks to the bottom. I still prefer uprights, though, because of the easy access.

I would get the biggest size that makes sense for you now based on how much space you have for a freezer and how much you can afford $$. Teenagers eat a lot...

Don't know about brands.

We have both a chest and an upright. I prefer the upright. It is easier to keep track of food! Even if I have food sorted and in bins, I still need to pull everything out of the chest freezer to take inventory!

I'm sure they aren't made nearly as well these days as they used to be, but the upright freezer we have is a Kenmore, from 1974. It was my parents' and they passed it to us when we married. I'm sure it's not very energy efficient but I keep it, just curious to see how long it will keep running!

We've had both and I prefer a CHEST freezer. It's what I grew up with and what we have now. You can get more into it.

Most people prefer an upright mainly b/c it's easier to get things out of it and it's easier to keep track of things.

I did a blog post a couple years ago about how I keep inventory of things in the CHEST freezer and how I organize it, so it's easy to get things in and out.
