Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thinking about Angie's recent thread (or recently bumped thread) and really trying to be more intentional about adding "pretty" things to our home.

I saw lots of of mentions of candles and was wondering where you buy your candles? What is the best kind? Soy? Bees Wax? I saw that Mrs. Meyers makes soy candles. Anyone tried these?

I think in the past there has been raised up concerns that the wicks or some manufactured candles have several chemicals and lead which aren't healthy to burn. I can't remember all that.

I love beeswax, but I look for bargains for the rest of the year. And I don't mind burning an occasional other brand, like Party Lite. I have some special candles for St. Lucia.

I read some things recently that really made me rethink the whole candle thing. Chemicals like formaldehyde can often be found in these candles and I just don't want to add that to the air in my home if I can avoid it. Fragrance sprays can also be similar.

I am sticking to beeswax (and soy) and have lately been investigating making my own --especially pillars.

I also got one of those led "candles" and am finding that I like it very much --especially inside our advent calendar.

Soy and beeswax and preferred over paraffin (petroleum based). Also, non-cored wicks are safer. The cored ones have a thin piece of metal inside the wick core. Lead is one that was used for a long time and still is in candles imported from other countries. Zinc is now used but is questionalbel also. So a non-cored (or cotton cored) wick is better.

I generally make my own candles, so I know what materials are being used.

What does everyone think of PartyLite? Safety-wise, I mean.

I used to sell them for a few years, but I was young and naive and went with the flow, so to speak. I remember them sending us notices about lead concerns - that their wicks are entirely cotton or sometimes have a paper/cotton wick (which they were getting away from as well).

I *love* the low melting point for the aspect of spilled wax on skin (happened just this morning).

Otherwise, I'm clueless - I use them because I have them!

But with that said, I do have a small child with large purple rings around his eyes - flares up to seemingly nothing. So if the candles arne't helping... out they go!
