Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can someone give me an idea of what the hourly rate for interior painting (walls and trim) is in the DC/MD/VA, Baltimore, or Philly areas?

My first painter did half the job (very nicely) and then went AWOL and the estimate from the second one (a professional handyman and friend of a friend) was five times more than the first guy wanted.

I'm a little confused.

We have always been quoted by square foot of area to be painted. Hourly doesn't seem fair. some people work very slowly!

It has always been too much, and I have ended up painting it myself.

We aren't in the DC area but we've gotten quotes several times. It's always been by square footage/room.

Price difference could be partially because of paint grade, number of coats, taping/covering trim and furniture vs. free-handing, not to mention what they think their time is worth. Could you find a college student or two to help you do it for a reasonable amount?

We're in Northern Virginia and have recently gotten quotes from two different painters. Both charge about $300/room--for a living room, for example. But a living room with cathedral ceilings would be more along the lines of $350. I have no idea what the hourly rate is because both these guys calculate the cost by the square footage of the room.
