I finally purchased a St. Andrew Missal, through ebay ($16 including S&H)...it arrived today, full of smoke smell. I emailed the seller, but the missal is so beautiful, and in otherwise great condition, I'd really love to be able to rid it of the smoke scent and be able to use it, since it seems to be very similar to the one my mother used. Has anyone successfully used activated charcoal, as mentioned in a previous thread on the subject of smokey smelling books? For now, I placed pieces of lavender scented dryer sheets between some of the more than 2000 pages and placed the missal, along with some scented cadnles, in a plastic container. I'm afraid of damaging the pages or the binding with all those pieces of dryer sheet tucked in between the pages. Any suggestions or ideas, please?!?!

Yay on finding the missal! Drat on the smell.
I have had success with placing both activated charcoal and book inside a ziploc bag, but my BEST SUCCESS has been on a table or clean surface, outside on a SUNNY day, with a light breeze to gently lift and blow pages. I did this with a particularly musty book for a couple of days and the smell was greatly diminished!
I sure hope you can air this treasure out, Servant!

Here's an old thread on smokey books that has some helpful links

Thank you, Jen. Thankfully, it's a sunny, breezy afternoon here, so I'll give it a try! I just removed the pieces of softener sheet, out of fear of damaging the pages or the binding. I'm off to grace the back deck with our newfound treasure. I think I'll set an alarm so I don't forget to bring it back inside before evening! Thank you again!

Thank you Jodie, I had seen the link when I searched, but forgot to open them, I was so distressed! If the sunlight and breeze doesn't do the trick, I'll be sure to try some of the other suggestions from the links! I have to say, watching the pages of the missal fluttering back and forth in the breeze gives me great delight and hopeful anticipation of using the missal, in remembrance of my dear mother. Just leafing through the pages, while I was putting the softener sheets among them, brought renewed appreciation of its wondrous contents.

I don't think I've ever been able to remove the smokey smell entirely, but I did most of the airing.
I tried using dryer sheets and they were so overpowering I just couldn't stand it.

Well, things are looking hopeful...I kept the missal in the sun and fresh air for 2-3 hours (until it looked like rain was threatening). Based on the links Jodie mentioned, I decided to try a combination approach, since the short time outside wasn't adequate and I so want to use the missal this Sunday. I put a 1 in. layer of Fresh Step kitty litter in the bottom of a large Rubbermaid food container, laid a bed of the lavender dryer sheets I had used earlier on top of the litter, then placed the missal atop the dryer sheeets in the center of several vanilla scented votive candles (being careful not to touch the edges of the missal with the candles). After an hour or so of this treatement, the smoke smell is markedly less, with no overpowering scent from the other items I was using to deodorize. I plan to leave the missal in the container at least overnight, possibly longer. The fact that I was able to spend several minutes leafing through the missal, without getting a headache or chest pain (which happened when I first tried to look through it) is hopeful! The missal is gorgeous and so inspiring! It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my soul knowing my family is going to be so incredibly blessed using the same type of missal my mother used so many years ago...I still remember leaning my five year old head against her warm fur jacket, watching her turn the pages of her missal ever so gently. The pages of this missal seem a little less flimsy and are not gilded... the cover and binding seem more sturdy as well. Thanks to everyone who gave such thoughtful responses on the missal thread dd Pilgrim started.
