Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

yes I said moose hide
my mother gave me two huge moose hides . they've been up in the attic of the cottage for yrs now and are both about 70 yrs old !
not worn out at all but they are terribly dried out and stiff . I had wanted to use one at least for making moccassins but it is far to dry & stiff to use in this state .
Do any of you ladies know how to soften old hides ?
please no chew on it jokes I've already heard that from dh
any ideas would be a great help .
thanks rox

Maybe a taxidermy shop or a hunting club can help you.

Or find a message board for Newfoundland residents and ask there. When we were in NL this summer, I was amazed at 1) how many people there hunt moose (a good thing - there are way too many moose there!) and 2) how many people were super-self-sufficient. I'd bet you could find a Newfoundlander who's worked moose hide.

If they've only been dried.. not tanned.. it may be possible to save them. So you might look into tanning methods.. I know when we were raising rabbits for pelts that we dried them before sending them to be tanned.. but we didn't do the tanning ourselves so I don't know much about that.

these are tanned / smoked . I'm going to see if maybe I can find an elder who would know what to do .
