I am interested in making lace by hand and was wondering if any of you have information on how to get started.

I know of http://www.arachne.com/list_instructions.htmlone online group, but so far I have been unsuccessful joining.

What kind of lace: knitted, bobbin, or tatting?

I'd google and check you tube as well as the library (esp inter-library) for books and just start going thru them, learning the vocabulary and then getting back online and searching using the right terms for whichever you want to learn.

The internet is phenomenal for help, but you need to use the terms of the trade ... I'm sure there are lace groups out there, you just have to narrow your field a bit.

I can recommend Dover publications as a source for pattern books. That is where I have ordered tatting books and I know I have seen bobbin lace books there as well.

I'm not sure if that will help you in the "how to learn" process. What kind of lace making were you thinking of?

Thank you MaryG and Ikselby for your ideas and suggestions. I will look into them.

To answer the question about "what kind of lace".....
I have done a little tatting in the past and really liked it, but I am most interested in needle lace like the alencon lace which I believe was what Zelie Martin made. It just intrigues me as I love working with my hands. I don't know if it is a reasonable quest which is why I am asking the group here. My knowledge about bobbin and needle lace making is very limited!!!
