I need help. We need to buy a new dishwasher  . If you love yours, tell me what kind it is and why it's so great. If you hate it, tell me what kind it is and why it's so awful.

LOVE my Miele.
Great features include: the third shelf, the cutlery shelf. No more getting stabbed by knives sticking up.
Sound insulation in the door. So quiet. We can put it on as we go to bed and not hear it.
It is of the more semi-industrial range, with a large family we only buy semi-industrial now.
We've now had it for five years and no problems, often running two to three times daily.

So where can I buy those Paula? 
Seriously... *hate* our dishwasher. Saving up for another Bosch (had one in a previous house and LOVED IT), or a Miele (had one in a rental and LOVED IT as well).
As for the why...
With the Bosch and the Miele, I've never had to pre-wash. Our Maytag is hit and miss -- some days good some days just AWFUL. Esp. those itty bitty gritty stuff that gets stuck on the glasses -- I don't even know where those come from, as we pre-rinse everything. (Every now and then a child will sneak in an un-pre-washed item, and I think it's enough to ruin the whole wash.)

We went with a Bosch after our Kenmore leaked. I liked the Kenmore but the thermostat in the heating element had problems and slowly melted a hole in the bottom tub. This time we went with a stainless steel interior. Worth the extra $ in our opinion!

UGH! I hate my dishwasher for the same reason. It is a Kenmore. Besides the above "strange particles", if we don't prewash everything, and even sometimes when we do ... which is strange ... little food bits get in the "spinner arms" and clog the holes so they don't spin and nothing gets clean. I'm not talking about alot of food, I'm talking about maybe a corn kernal. Just one ruins the whole load.

I love ours! We almost got a Bosch, but I really wanted heated dry. I know, it's a little thing. So we got a Frigidaire Professional, and it's been wonderful (and so quiet!

The house we just bought has no dishwasher. I have no immediate plans to purchase one. It's kind of liberating to not have one anyway.
I've no problem loading a dishwasher up. But getting the dishes unloaded and put away in a timely manner is a struggle for some reason.
And... I'm not "supposed" to wash my knives, my cast iron, my non-stick pans, my aluminum cups, my wooden serving spoons, the insulated coffee cups, the stainless steel water bottles... My large pots won't fit and the 7 qt. crockpot dish takes up too much space.
Every meal, I'm doing SOME dishes by hand anyway. And couple that with the fact that dishes need to at least be rinsed off before going into the dishwasher makes it just an unnecessary appliance in my opinion. Well... it does make a good, large drying rack.
I don't really mind having a sink full of sudsy dishwater during the day. If you wash a little at a time, it can actually be nice and therapeutic...
(or at least a great punishment for naughty children)

We have an ANCIENT Kenmore -- it was here when we bought the house in '02 and it was old then -- and it's still going strong!

Double UGH!
Ours, too. It is a GE, and I have vowed to never by another GE appliance again. Aside from strange specs on rinsed dishes and the food that came from ? in the spinner arms  , we also have had problems with over-heating and smoke (had to call fire department!  ,) leaking, and rickety-racks (and that isn't a cheer!)
Everytime I get agitated with the thing, I try to remember to be grateful we have one.  It is better than doing it all by hand, especially for super hot washes to keep all sanitary when we are in cold and flu season. However, I am filing all the recommendations made here, for that day, however long into the future, when we will need a new one.

In our old houe we had a GE white not frills dishwasher. Our purchases tend to be very econimical (cheap) . I didn't notice anything great or bad about it. It did its job. However, we just celebrated a year in our new home and the appliances came with it. I can see the difference. Our dishwasher is a Frigidaire Profesional Series with Aqua Surge (have no idea what this means )stainless steel and I love that it is much quieter, has different settings: time, heat, sanitize, crystal wash, scrub wash, and about five other buttons . (I love the look as well) I have no idea what it originally cost, but I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have paid for it at the store .

Does the dishwashing interfere with the nail polish?
It's funny you say that, because I so hate to make decisions about large purchases that I said to my dh "Why don't we just have the kids wash the dishes and not buy one?"
Thanks for all the responses. I will definitely be looking at the Bosch line, and 2 votes for the Frigidaire Professional - that's interesting. Frigidaire is not one I often think of. Good to know.

I've been married for 6 years now and we moved into this house last year. This is the first time I've had a built in dishwasher! Haha...I'm constantly reminding myself of the not-so "good 'ol days"!
Anyways, this house came with a Whirlpool. It's pretty old, but still cleans fairly well...although lately it's been leaving food particles (maybe I need to refill the jetdry). We haven't had any other problems with it thus far.

Anita, We were armed with Consumer Reports, and whatever was on sale. 
The installer informed me that the Professional line is actually an upscale Electrolux (made by). But I've heard lately that has gone down in performance.
I just had a few requirements, but the main one was quiet. And that has been the biggest bonus ever. Stainless interior isn't necessary, but it sure is pretty.

We recently removed the dishwasher that came with the house, which had been out of commission for a couple years or more...we hung quilted pillow shams in front, which match a quilt hanging on the wall of our adjacent family command center area...we used cafe hooks on a tension rod across our "new cubby", then put a rolling three tiered basket rack inside...it has been SO handy! During our Summer painting projects we kept all our paint and supplies in there....now that those are packed away, we use it to store kitchen misc. like paper products and snacks, which always cluttered our pantry. We don't miss the dw at all! It seemed to take just as much time and effort to rinse, load and empty the dw as it does to wash, drain and put away hand washed dishes. I know this doesn't answer your question, but it may be an option if you decide to forego the dw. I'm just sorry we didn't get rid of ours sooner...it was a real dirt catcher and wasted valuable space we've been very grateful to reclaim.

Well, we ended up going with a Bosch. We went to Lowe's to pick up a quart of paint, and walked out having purchased a dw. Talk about shopping off list!! The incentive was the rebate of $125 from the state and the 10% off sale. The legislature approved 1800 of the rebates Thursday and by Saturday morning there were only 300 rebates left. We jumped. Now, we just wait for delivery. Thanks for all your input. It's great to hear real world experience from trustworthy sources.
