Does anyone else have this problem with their mail carrier? That instead of bringing larger envelopes that obviously contain books they try to stuff it in your mailbox?

I've spoken with our postmaster several times about this and each time they said they the carrier should have delivered our mail to the porch. One time the mailbox door would not close and it was a rainy day so my books were both bent and warped. The most recent incidence was two weeks ago when our mail was resumed after vacation and a week's worth of mail (and one book) was stuffed in the mailbox. It took my dh ten minutes to extract everything!

So has anyone here purchased a larger mailbox to accommodate frequent book orders? Any specific recommendations?

I always feel kind of guilty when I see my mail carrier walk up our 100 foot drive way to deliver my books. It happens on a regular basis, and I almost feel like I should tip him for the long walk.

I would be SUPER frustrated if books were getting ruined by him not delivering them to the door. However, in your case Tracy, it doesn't seem as if your carrier is going to change his ways. I probably would look at larger mail box if I were you.

I'd place a laminated note on the mailbox, requesting that large packages or large amounts of mail be brought to the door...if you've already spoken to the postmaster and he is in agreement with you on what should have been done, perhaps just a little reminder as the mailman is about to stuff your mailbox will jog his memory!

Wow, Tracy, your post really makes me appreciate our mail carrier! She's super attentive to these kind of things and spent years schlepping book packages to my front porch that didn't fit in my mailbox.

For my birthday last year, I asked for a larger mailbox. We picked one out at Lowe's - a nice sturdy metal one! And now she is able to fit several small - medium size packages at once into our mailbox. Most bigger orders come thru UPS so I don't have to worry about those while most of my books come through the mail. I've loved having the bigger mailbox! Maybe it would make a nice Christmas hint for you???

We have a PO box so the packages stay in the post office until I pick them up. which is a very nice thing considering the other frustrations of ordering when the post office does not deliver to a street address.

How about this for a solution? Order enough books at once that they come in a box instead of an envelope

Our mail carrier uses garbage bags that tie and hangs them on the flag part of our mailbox. If it looks like rain she double bags the package.

Our carrier bends things and shoves them in. I can't replace the box because it's a USPS-owned cluster (we had our own boxes but our local youths kept bashing them and setting them on fire, grrr).

Our problem is that our road is a private one so she doesn't have to come down at all if she doesn't want to. She does deliver larger boxes (actually, I think that postal carrier is a different person on a "box run") but she doesn't care how bashed up our magazines and books become.

Wow - some of you are super fortunate to have attentive mail carriers!

Books send UPS are fine - it's the used deals on Amazon that come from various booksellers that are the problem.

I am thinking that a larger mailbox would make a great August 14th gift for the whole family! The latch has been broken by the mail carrier anyway

Thanks - I knew that home school moms here who order books would have great advice!

Our mail carrier is very considerate. He usually hangs books in a plastic bag around the mailbox post. Saturday we had 3 or 4 books in the mail, and he brought all the books and the rest of the mail to the door (he came 600 uphill in his truck), which was very kind of him.

Peace,
Nancy

My mail carrier tries to shove the books when he or she can. Unfortunately, I can't get a larger mail box because the only allowed mailboxes in our development are black, four inches wide, and with white, one-inch alphanumeric characters. At out previous home, we did have a large Rubbermaid mailbox that fit just about everything. I would so love to have one like that again.

Sighing,

My regular carrier is very good about putting books on the porch. But the other day we had a substitute and he shoved in a hardback that I couldn't get out without much struggle and having to bend it. I was furious.

Wow, I've never been "glad" I didn't have a driveway before We live in the city, and if it doesn't fit through the mail slot, they just open the screen door and set it on the porch. We have considered refinishing our porch to include a sturdy storm door which would lock from the outside, and if we do that, we'd have to get a city mailbox.

Come to think of it, I don't think I have that many books arrive USPS. It is mostly UPS or Fedex.

I hope to meet the mailman halfway. We purchased a large mailbox from Home Depot and I am going to tape up a sign requesting, "Please do not bend flats containing books - please be kind and deliver them to the porch so they remain flat."

I hope this helps. If not I might have to light the oven and bake some cookies!
