Dh just finished painting the front porch, next job is the back porch and deck, but we're planning ahead on our winter project which will be painting the downstairs. We've postponed it for various reasons, mainly because we have to REMOVE wallpaper before we can paint. Yuck!

In our family room, dining room, and entry hall we have chair rails.

Here are my questions that I'm fielding opinions.

How many of you do contrasting colors underneath chair rails?

And if you do, do you go darker below?

Do you just keep it the same color all the way down?

We are in a rental home that has chair rails in the upstairs bedrooms: white above, darker color below (light blue in one, greenish-gray in the other). Both look really nice.

In the one room where we have chair rails, we painted only above them. Below is *fancy* with decorative moldings. This is in the dining room, so it's kind of blue and white - all the rest of the trim, including the lower part of the walls is white. There are also chair rails in the upstairs hallway, but we haven't had *that conversation* yet. Most people I see paint the lower half darker - either a contrasting color or a darker shade of the color for the top half. Either way looks very nice.

I want to do a pale yellow above, and was thinking a darker blue underneath. That combo is making dh nervous.

We just did a bathroom in a buttery yellow shade, with navy blue accents in the shower curtain, floor (already in the linoleum) and towels. The combination is quite cheerful and lovely...it reminds me of Monet's home....I've noticed some decorators attribute using those colors to the effect Monet's home had on them.

Our choice of those colors in the bathroom just kind of happened by chance, but we're quite pleased with the results. Dh used to always prefer white walls....that's what he grew up with, and that's what we've mainly had in any of the homes we've lived in. Dh has been surprisingly pleased with every single color we've used while painting most of the the rooms in our house this Summer! I was actually the skeptical one, until the rooms were finished! Color can truly transform your home and the mood it creates!

Chair rails add such character to a home! I think the old rule of thumb used to be lighter color above, darker below, but I've seen some stunning examples of the opposite! Decorating books from the library can be extremely helpful when you're uncertain about a change in your home or you're stuck while making a decision. I borrowed several books while doing our painting...it was very helpful to look through various books and note what colors had the most pleasing effect. We were using a lot of cans of mismatched colors, so we weren't able to make some initial choices on the colors themselves, but looking through decorating books really helped us decide which rooms to use the various colors in.

I've heard adding vinegar to the water makes the job a lot easier if you're steaming old wallpaper. Children seem to enjoy peeling wallpaper off the walls (sometimes when you don't want them to)! Hope you're able to enjoy the process of feathering your nest!
