Argh... I've read in several places now how bad it is for you. The chemicals from the bag leach out onto the popcorn. Figures- something so easy and yummy and sort of good for you (the popcorn, anyway) is now on the bad list.
I guess it's back to the air popper...

I have popped *normal* popcorn in the microwave. Put it in a paper bag with a couple drops of water, fold the top of the bag over, and turn on the popcorn setting or else stand there and listen to when the *pops* slow down. Of course, it isn't as immediately yummy as the pre-packaged stuff - lacking the butter and salt. But those things (or any other seasonings) are easily added. Or else you can pop corn on the stove, the old-fashioned way. I agree, I love the microwave pre-packaged popcorn but have given it up after hearing or reading that it's very bad for you.

Well, besides cleaning the pot, popcorn on the stove isn't really so much more work. I think that coconut oil makes THE YUMMIEST popcorn, and I have friends who have bought it just to make popcorn after having mine.
WAY yummier than air-popped, imo, and no chemicals.

We are stove poppers here. I would love to use coconut oil, but my 3yo is allergic to coconut. We use extra virgin olive oil...it is soooo yummy! Popcorn is a big part of our lives here

We have a lot of coconut oil in the house, as my dd eats quite a bit of it on her diet.
I truly love popcorn, but I can only eat it at night after she is asleep, since it is not on her diet. At 9 pm I don't feel capable of much more than putting a bag in the microwave .
BUT- I did grow up as a stove popper. I have seen ads for those WhirlyPop pots that look good, better than shaking the pot all the time. Has anyone used one?
I think I will also try Nancy's idea of making my own in a bag. Thanks everyone!

You don't really need to shake the pot all the time. It really only takes a few minutes to make. Put the oil in, turn on the heat (med high to high), put in the kernels, shake it to coat the kernels in oil, wait for it to start popping shake it a couple more times to get the unpopped kernels to the bottom and you are done

Well Tim just bought a BIG box of the microwave stuff. It smells terrible! I'm definitely going to have to try the putting the "normal" popcorn in a bag. I'm too lazy to do the stove top method.
Nancy, I'm assuming by "normal" you mean the kind that you buy in a big glass bottle? Is there an ideal amount to put in the bag? (As in will too much not work well?)

I remember reading about this a while back and I can't remember exactly what is used in the popcorn bags to make them a health risk. However...whatever it was I *think* I've seen some microwave boxes sell as ".... free". May be it's my preggo brain but I think that's right b/c I started buying it again. I just can't remember the name of the stuff.

Melinda, I don't have one but the good quality whirly-pop styles have gotten really good recommendations from people I know.. say that the popcorn tastes sooooo much better too.

Anyone try other types of corn for popcorn (other than the standard you'd find in the popcorn section at the grocery)? I saw an episode of Good Eats a few weeks ago that featured popcorn. He said that many other kinds produce yummier popcorn without the need for seasoning at all. Pretty sure he popped them in a pan on the stove.

I buy organic yellow from the bulk section of the HFS. I do think it has more natural "flavor" than the regular bagged from the store, perhaps because it is fresher?
I have also tried some that was "Amish" white. They were SO tiny! It was fun, and I might do it again for a kids party or something, but it was sort of messier to have around because it was small and harder to eat. Popped, they were probably the size of M&Ms, so it was a lot of work to eat the quantity one desires with popcorn

You know, I have been itching to jump into this thread since it started, Melinda! Because WE LOVE POPCORN!!!!!!! I make it at least every other day, and we put leftover popcorn (if there is any) in a bag for the little kids to snack on the next day.

I know EXACTLY what you mean! We tried those too.
I'm picky about getting most of the kernels to pop and not having tons of the popcorn hulls to deal with. I was desperate and ran out of popcorn the other day so I grabbed some Orville Redenbachers white corn from the market near us...and we loved it! It pops very nicely and there weren't an inordinate amount of hulls.
Lehman's has a really nice selection of popcorn. They actually have quite an extensive popcorn collection! We like their salts and have tried a couple of their popcorns.
I've never made popcorn in the microwave with a paper bag! I might have to try that sometime.
Here's our recipe...1 tablespoon of coconut oil, heat pan, add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels, leave on heat until you don't hear popping anymore, immediately remove from heat and dump in a BIG bowl. Drizzle small amount of melted butter over hot popcorn and salt immediately. Toss. Dig in. Super yum!!! Popcorn is our favorite food group here...and has been known to substitute for dinner a few times.

Here's what I do with my popcorn. No measuring. Pour a layer of oil in the pot, put one or two kernels in. When they pop, the oil is hot and ready. Pour a layer of corn in. It starts to pop almost immediately. I don't shake except for the first time to coat the kernels. I do vent the steam so that the popcorn doesn't get soggy from the steam.
I also salt and season while hot so it sticks better to the corn.
I am going to check out the coconut oil though.

That's what I do, KC. I find that the amounts can all vary according to the size of your pot.
One nice thing about coconut oil (in addition to the taste and health benefits) is that it doesn't as readily form that yellowish film on the pot that is so hard to scrub.

A thick bottom is important, but I also like one that is taller than it is wide.

My mom often has popcorn for dinner and as a kid it wasn't uncommon to have it for dinner. I once found my mom the perfect Mother's Day card. The outside said "Mother is another word for Love" and inside "Just like popcorn is another word for dinner" Perfect for my mom!

I've never really liked microwave popcorn b/c it is usually SO greasy and over-salted. Then when the whole thing about trans-fats came to light, I quit buying it for the kids/dh either, although I know they now have brands that claim no trans-fats. Then I read that the bag linings contain perfluorooctanoic acid, a known carcinogen, that migrates into the popcorn when heated.
I've done the stove popping (like others, just layer oil in the bottom, put 2 kernels in and then the rest when they pop) with good results, and I've tried popping in a paper bag with a little olive oil sprayed on the inside. But most of the time now we use our WestBend Stircrazy popper and I like it a lot. Before we got it, we'd had an older West Bend that was identical except it didn't have the stirrer rod - it had been my parents' before we got married, so it had lasted at least 20 years!
I buy popcorn through a local dry food co-op, in 25 lb bags.
i haven't tried using my coconut oil for popcorn yet! will try that tonight

Karen, we had that popper growing up, and I really did like it. I must have spent a lot of time watching it, because the image in my head of it working is CRYSTAL clear!
It did eventually die (though, I think it was quite old at the time), and we reverted back to the pot method. When I consider storing another appliance, I'm quite happy with my pot, but that popper was fun and the popcorn tasty.
My FIL has one of those pots where you turn the rotary handle, and he's convinced its the bees knees, but I can't really see its that much better than mine. Plus he won't salt it I mean, I respect his health concerns, but why can we eat Stovetop stuffing and Campbell's soup but not salt the popcorn
In my stove popping also have had luck throwing a couple of tablespoons of sugar in with the kernels to make kettle corn. I do have to stir until the sugar dissolves, but it is very tasty! You still add a touch of salt at the end though! Its the salt that brings out the sweet
