I'm wondering if anyone has swim goggle recommendations (Jodie, perhaps?). My kids are taking swim lessons and they'd all like a pair. I've heard that good goggles make a big difference.

FWIW--I make sure my kids can swim without them before purchasing them for them. I see so many children very dependent on their goggles and cannot swim without them--if they forget them, lose them, they leak, etc.
Dd got hers this year when I saw her little eyeballs looking at me from under water. She was so excited to be able to swim without them. No things aren't as clear as with goggles but you can see underwater enough to swim around and fetch things off the bottom.
And we have been OK with the cheapo goggles from Walmart or Target but do make sure we get them for the right aged child--don't get adult goggles for a 5 year old

I get all my kids the Speedo Vanquisher.. they have sizes to fit all my kids (standard, womens, juniors, kids) womens and juniors are close to the same fit.. but womens have more girly colors 
my kids from about 9 or 10 use the womens or juniors.. up until then the kids are fun and work well.
But my reasoning is that the straps are all interchangable AND they can use the bungee straps (which are usually available at any swim meet).
We do get a much better fitting goggle going with the name brands speedo and tyr are ones we've used.
I would take them into a swim shop if you can and try a bunch of different ones.. if the goggle is too small they'll come inside the bone of the eye socket and hurt.. but too big and they'll hit the nose and/or not get a good seal at the outside (where the face curves and the goggle doesn't).
And I recommend buying from swimoutlet.com best prices for what you get.
The ones with the plastic/rubber gasket tend to get a better seal for extended time than the foam gasket ones.

oh and like Anne, my kids don't use goggles until they're on swim team for exactly the same reason.. they will know how to swim without the goggles being a crutch by the time they start swim team.
Younger kids will also fuss and fidgit with the goggles and it can interfer with classes. Do take them (kids and goggles) to the pool and get in with them where you can adjust the goggles and get a good fit IN THE WATER before letting them wear them during lessons.
Oh and on the needing to swim without goggles.. even the "big kids" on swim team will knock their goggles cattywampus diving in and will have to swim with the goggles half on and half off, over their mouths.. all sorts of things.

I never thought about goggles being a crutch for swimming. My big kids are both such fish in water but both like their goggles. My son esp. needs them b/c his eyes are soo very sensitive that if he swims 2-3 days in a row w/o goggles, his eyes are major red and itchy I guess from the chlorine but it happened Sat at my SIL's pool that's saltwater. ?! We haven't found a pair this year that really work for him tho so I'm going to check some of these out.
Also, side note but I can't even remember now what I use for his irritated eyes and I needed it Sat. Anyone have a recommendation on that?

Kathryn, I usually see them used as a crutch when the kids learn to swim with them. It becomes "I can't swim without them" vs "I need them to protect my eyes".. and I mean that literally.. kids will panic in the water and NOT be able to swim without them.
We like the Similasan homeopathic eye drops for allergy eyes (for hay fever).. the one for dry eyes might help what you're dealing with.. or pink eye, since one of the things that can cause pink eye is environmental irritants..
Something soothing though.. a lot of the eye drops that help reduce the reddness will hurt the eyes though once you get through that they may help.

If your kids wear glasses, you can order googles with some correction from swimmerschoice.com for around $18. They come in strengths like -2.0, etc. My optometrist helped me get the right strength for my son and now he can see at the pool.

This is SO IMPORTANT! I had a HUGE correction by the age of 12, and prescription goggles came out when I was in high school and swimming year round on the swim team. It was MAGIC, I tell you...simply MAGIC!  Probably one of the happiest days of my teenage years!
I'm a -7.0 and they have goggles for me, and they last a long time! They are very well made, compared to regular goggles.....you just have to make sure you don't lose them. Totally worth the $$$$

I've been eyeing those for myself  I think the swimoutlet.com also has a choice of prescription goggles.. but I haven't really looked at them yet.. just seen them and thought how nice that would be.
But I can see well enough.. just a bit blurred.

I did not know they could do that....thank you!
My oldest Ds has to wear goggles when he swims because he has a prosthetic eye. Very important if he's swimming in the surf. One good dump and his eye could be dislodged and lost forever....
He, my Dd and I all wear glasses for correction also. (His correction is minimal, his seeing eye is actually pretty good but spectacles help protect it from foreign objects and dirt.) It's handy to know in case his sight does deteriorate over time. (Along with my own... )
