I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I really need bunk bed advice.

We're expecting #3 in August and would like to get a bunk bed for our young dds ages almost 6 and 3.5 years.

What should we look for?   I'm thinking twin over full or twin over twin.   Twin over twin would be better for conserving space in the room (it's rectangle shape with one window in the middle of the short side of the room and the closet and entrance on the other short side of the room).

But, if the girls want to share/sleep together a full size bed would be nice. Full size would also be nice for bedtime stories with mom and dad, or having adult company that need a place to sleep.

Dh and I are rather large people, so we need a supportive bed to hold our weight to change sheets or if we were to read stories, etc.

Any recommendations on what to buy? Brands, stores, etc?   Should I even bother looking at Craig's list?   Obviously I want to save money, but if we buy something quality and safe, hopefully it will last until they leave for college and beyond.   I don't know what kind of quality I'd get going with Craig's list.

okay, is #3 a girl or boy?

If it's a girl, I'd go ahead and consider a twin over twin bunk with a twin trundle that pops up. Then the two older can sleep together now if they want, and you already have a bed for #3 when the time comes.

As for the top bunk and changing the sheets etc.. the best thing I've ever done is get a lightweight foam mattress on top of either a padded board or a box spring.. I can just lift that quite easily down to where I can change the sheet and then put it back up. Your 6 yr old should be ale to help you smooth blankets and tuck them down into the sides.

I've had kids frequently choose to sleep 2 to a twin so that wouldn't concern me at all with going with a twin over twin.. the best part about a trundle or drawers or even just a mattress slid under the bottom bunk.. it keeps out stuff from accumulating under there

If you like to build, Family Fun magazine had a loft bed plan, online, that we altered some, that could be made into YOUR bunks. It is easily customizable--and sturdy. Just as an FYI.

They have bunk beds where the bottom is full size, but can fold UP into a futon couch...that might save room, but be flexible, too...

FYI: In my experience you have to pay big bucks for a trundle that won't break. I've seen two "quality" (all wood, not particle board) trundles break easily with typical childhood squirrely behavior. I will not buy another trundle.

That said, you can get a quality bunk without breaking the bank. I would indeed check craigslist. Also, unfinished furniture stores. Look for solid wood.

We are supposed to be having a girl.

What do you think of something like this? Besides the gigantic price tag, would this be something you experienced bunk-bed users would consider?

My dh has computer skills, but unfortunately no handy-man type skills.

those are nice.. I wonder if you can put them together so that the L goes the other direction.. I like that the second one has the 2 twins over a full

Yeah, I'm dreaming a bit here. Right now I'm just looking at function and debating the type of set up. I'm the queen of indecision and I alway second guess myself.

The other day, dh said, "so, we need to budget about $300 for bunk beds, right?"

Needless to say he hasn't been doing any research on these.

We have these futon bunk beds and I only mention them as a caution against them. They are really bad. Just awfully flimsy. I wish we had gone with something better but we had to get something together quickly for my grandsons and this was what was available here. My advice: AVOID these beds.

Okay, I think after discussing it with dh and looking high and low over the internet, we have found our answer for the bunk bed situation!

We decided quality matters to us and we would rather spend a little more to have a bed that will last the test of time and the children's "abuse". I hope we can even pass it on to our grandkids (God willing) someday (a friend of mine is using her solid hardwood bunkbed from her childhood with her own kids-- now that is money well spent!)

So here is the link if anyone is interested. They are a family owned business in Texas and everything is made in the USA. They offer a 10 year warranty. With so many things being made in China, dh and I like this. Each bed is hand-crafted and looks like good quality.

It's not as "girly" as my children would like, but their room is already painted pink and I can always find super girly bedding.

We are going with the stackable twin over twin with roll out trundle.
