Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd is 7 and allergic to dairy and eggs--among other things. This has been weighing on me lately for a whole host of reasons---bone health, growth, etc. She has a physical appointment in July and I will address some of my concerns with her pedi. She seems fine except a little thin--but my kids run thin because they are always running and playing :) Right now I am struggling to find protein she will eat.
Take out cheese, milk, eggs and peanuts (sorry, forgot that one) and I am at a loss for protein sources for her. She is not a big meat eater, either.
She is going to run cross country starting in August and is already thin so I am worried.
So, I am going to look into a protein shake for her at Whole Foods next time I am in there. I need ideas for snacks mostly as she is a grazer. Tofu recipes kids like? Beans?
Help...

bean dips? (so many beans..what's that one you eat with pitas made from garbanzo beans? )
tree nuts? (almonds, cashews etc) You can get these in "butter" forms too for spreading on crackers and such.
sunflower seeds? get the raw variety rather than roasted.. this is also in a butter form that's yummy.
mix your flours for breads and things.. you could mix corn or rice or even bean flour into whole wheat flour and get more complete proteins like that.

What about things like chicken salad or tuna salad that could be eaten on crackers.. I think they have a vegan mayo.. or a friend of mine makes a chicken salad with a bit of olive oil in it rather than mayo.

Silly me.. I use these a lot of snacks for the kids playing sports (lacrosse and swim team)

Oatmeal Bars

1/2 c oil
1/2 c apple sauce
1/2 c honey
1 t vanilla
2 t cinnamon
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t baking pwd
1/2 t salt
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
3 c. oats
1 c raisins (optional)

mix together and spread in a greased 9x11 cake pan. bake at 350 for 20 min

I like mixing in chopped nuts.. walnuts or almonds or such for protein.

And you can mix these up.. add in different dried fruits. I like using canned cranberry sauce instead of the apple sauce and mixing in dried cranberries and walnuts for instance. The kids of course love it when I add in chocolate chips (there's probably a safe option for your daughter with those).

Pumpkin seeds- good for fiber and protein. Most health food stores have a nice selection. Harris Teeter stores carry an organic version that is very tasty.

Not for protein, but broccoli has a lot of calcium as do all those yummy greens...bok choy, artichoke, collards, etc.

Is the milk allergy severe, or is there a chance that goat's milk products would be possible?

My neighbor "forced" some salmon croquettes on me while I was plowing their driveway, and they were good and could be fun to make together.

If you get her involved in "owning" her dietary adjustments, maybe she will be more interested in eating things she helps you prepare.

What does cross country for a 7yo look like? I remember it as a rather taxing sport for high school kids, but I am old so things may have changed ;)

Good luck!

I have always been thin and had trouble putting on muscle (been an issue because I've been in physical therapy for years and am sooo slow to improve). I never thought I didn't eat enough protein because I grazed on nuts all day long until my brother mentioned that nuts are really more of a source of fat than anything else. I eliminated the cashews and started supplementing my diet with vanilla soy protein powder (a scoop in a glass of water and I add about 1/2 tsp strawberry syrup to help with flavor). It's not delicious but isn't bad and it gets lots of protein down easily. It has made a big difference for me. At first I made protein shakes using powder and fresh fruit, but that was too much work. You might also try soy milk with cereal as a snack.

My teens are thin too. They swim and one plays football too. Losing muscle mass was a concern. My brother said to have them eat about 200 calories of some simple sugar before practice (juice) and then have protein (a protein bar -- around here cheapest at Sams) within 1-2 hours after practice. Then they have 3 whole grain pbj sandwiches throughout the middle of the day (could substitue cashew butter). We've done this and they quit losing weight and muscle. Of course a 7yo girl wouldn't need quite as much.

Tuna or chicken salad would work too. Tons of protein there.

Thank everyone.
Cross country for 2nd grade is only a 1 mile run. Piece of cake.
