Lately my boys are always hungry, particularly those who are growing.
Can we make a list here of good, tasty snacks to have on hand that aren't super expensive or unhealthy? I don't want to promote lots of snacking as I think it can ruin mealtime, but there are definitely times I need to have something for them. Cheerios just aren't what I want them to reach for! My teen is especially hungry all the time.

when they're hungry and growing.. give them protein.. it may cost more but they can be satisfied with less.
Just watch out for snacking to "have something to do".
Also, if you're concerned about it ruining mealtimes.. let them eat something you'd be happy to have eaten at mealtimes.. like raw veggies.
Bread is pretty filling and good for you if made with whole wheat and paired with a piece of fruit you don't even need any sort of spread on the bread.

My boys like apple slices with peanut butter for dipping, yogurt with fruit and granola, apple sauce, granola bars, boiled eggs, cheese quesadillas, orange slices, carrots with ranch or poppyseed dressing for dipping.
Oh, btw I do snacks at least twice a day, so it isn't unusual for growing kids at all. I find keeping their blood sugars on more of an even keel helps with keeping THEM on an even keel, if you know what I mean.

I agree with protein, and, unless your kids have weight problems, some sort of healthy fat. My kids could eat fruit all day, and I'm glad they like it, but they're also hungry all day. So now I only allow the fruit if there is a protein or fat with it. Apples and peanut butter, as Theresa suggested, is a great one. My kids also like to dip strawberries into fruit dip made with cream cheese. We eat alot of cheese too, although the sinus problems we've been having is probably a sign that we all need to lay off the dairy. I'm going to introduce them to guacomole (not sure I spelled that right) as soon as I get some avocados.
We have a planned afternoon snack (we call it tea time) but in the morning my kids are usually wanting a snack too. I think it's normal, especially for active kids.

We usually have two snacks a day, too. One between breakfast and lunch and one between lunch and supper. We usually do: muffins or quick breads, hummus w/ crackers or raw veggies, cheese w/ bread or crackers, fruit smoothies, apples with pb (sunbutter for peanut allergic ds), or homemade granola bars.

I buy these Thomas' hearty grains whole grain muffins and split them in half (my big kids are a little younger) and slap peanut butter on one side for my daughter (son's allergic). For my son, it's usu. a little pizza sauce, some cheese and a few slices of turkey pepperoni heated in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Seems to fill them up plenty w/o ruining dinner. They're also easy enough to eat on a paper towel so no dishes required!

We have a rule that a snack is like a little meal, so they can have anything they would have at a meal - bread, rice cakes with peanut butter, fruit, veggies, a sliver of cheese - we don't usually have enough eggs or left over meat for that to be snacks. Sometimes they will have plain popcorn - I will pop a panful and store it in an air tight container, as it works for the desire to snack without real hunger. For real hunger, I offer veggies and bread.

Thanks SO much! This helps. None of my kids have a weight problem. The run on an acreage and are very active. So I think they must just need more food these days. I've made a list of snacks from your ideas and will have them on hand. I was just brain dead and struggled for ideas. Thanks. And keep them coming. . .

Sarah, I do splurge and buy some snacks at vitacost.com . I get rice cakes, Soledad nuts, freeze dried apples, Lundberg rice chips, Barbara's puffs, stuff like that. I search "snacks" and he pick a few, once a month. I have found that my male teen is not only hungry and growing but he also really appreciates having something special to eat that is just his...something that fits his idea of a man being free to eat what he wants, when he wants, without mama's permission. He's also inclined to wanting sweets and junk food (unlike his older sister who is a healthy foodie) so this is a compromise of sorts.
Oh...and sunflower seeds for my ballplayer. Lots and lots of sunflower seeds.
Love,
